MUMBAI: In a bold move to uphold digital decorum and safeguard public sensibilities, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has ordered the immediate blocking of 25 over-the-top (OTT) platforms and their associated websites.
Among those affected are well-known names such as Ullu, ALTBalaji, and Desiflix — platforms accused of streaming sexually explicit, obscene, and vulgar content in violation of Indian legal and ethical standards.
The Ministry’s directive, issued to all Internet Service Providers across the nation, mandates the restriction of public access to these platforms, many of which had gained notoriety for circulating content bordering on soft pornography under the guise of entertainment.

Officials stated that the action comes as part of a wider effort to regulate digital media, especially content that exploits loopholes in the current censorship framework.
The government has repeatedly voiced concerns over the proliferation of inappropriate material online, which it believes can have damaging effects on societal norms and younger audiences.
This sweeping measure is being viewed as a significant turning point in India’s digital policy framework.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a responsible digital ecosystem that promotes creative freedom without compromising on decency and legality.
Further investigations are underway, and platform owners may face legal consequences if found guilty of breaching content guidelines and IT laws. The government also urged OTT platforms to exercise self-regulation and remain within the bounds of acceptable digital conduct.
This crackdown is likely to have far-reaching implications for India’s booming digital entertainment sector, prompting both viewers and creators to re-evaluate the balance between artistic liberty and lawful restraint.
