MUMBAI: 2 States remains one of the most celebrated and commercially successful films in the Hindi film industry, earning blockbuster status at the box office and winning hearts across the nation.
The film featured Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles, and their refreshing on-screen chemistry struck an instant chord with audiences, becoming one of the movie’s biggest highlights.
Interestingly, 2 States was adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s bestselling novel of the same name. In a recent interview, the author revealed that Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra were initially considered to play the lead roles before the final casting took shape.

In a candid chat with an entertainment portal, author Chetan Bhagat shared interesting details about the early casting plans for 2 States. He revealed that before Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt came on board, the film was first planned with big Bollywood names.
According to him, when Vishal Bharadwaj was supposed to direct the movie, Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Priyanka Chopra were among the actors being considered for the lead roles. I think 2 States sabhi ke naam ka article to aaya hi tha.” He added
Bhagat admitted that he was initially unsure when the film later went to a new director and featured two newcomers—Arjun and Alia—who had only one film each at the time.
He continued by saying, “It was such a nice casting, and it made the movie fresh because they were young. If it were older actors, I don't know, maybe they would have done a great job. But it was very surprising.” He added that even Kai Po Che! faced similar challenges, with many actors turning it down, but Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkummar Rao, and Amit Sadh eventually made the film unforgettable.
Chetan also fondly recalled moments with Shah Rukh Khan that left a lasting impression. He shared how SRK showed extraordinary humility—pulling out a chair for him on the sets of Om Shanti Om and even walking him and Mohit Suri to their car after a meeting at his home. For Chetan, these gestures proved why Shah Rukh is loved not just as a superstar but also as a person.
