Presenting...Paoli "sizzling" Dam, in a candid chat with Movie Chakkar

So what about your image of a bold girl back in Kolkata? “I don’t know what you mean by bold, for most of my roles back home, be it Kaalbela (directed by Gautam Ghosh) or Sob Charitro Kalponik (Rituparno Ghosh) have been of traditional Bengali woman with substance or back bone, so if you mean that by bold, so be it.” But in Mumbai bold means skin show. “Yes there was lot of it in Hate Stories, we always called it a bold film. But that explicitness was part of the story’s concept.
Paoli Dam
After the success of Vikram Bhatt produced Hate Stories the sexy and sultry Bengali bomb Paoli Dam is all set to blow the senses in one more flick. “I am in Kolkata now and will return to Mumbai on the 16th and then will talk about it.” She is also under a contract to do Love Game with Vikram, so we need to wait and watch if it is thesame project or something else , as she had informed us earlier,“ that her two film contact with Vikram is not an exclusive one and she was looking at other scripts as well.” Paoli has done a number of Bengali movies (Moner Manush and Banshiwala etc) since 2007 and Hate Stories gave her a national foot print. “I am so happy that my debut Hindi film clicked and for the first time people outside Bengal recognized me. I was even mobbed for pictures at the Mumbai airport. My multi-dimensional role in Hate Stories not only allowed me to express all kinds of emotions, but the entire story revolved around my character Kavya.” So what about your image of a bold girl back in Kolkata? “I don’t know what you mean by bold, for most of my roles back home, be it Kaalbela (directed by Gautam Ghosh) or Sob Charitro Kalponik (Rituparno Ghosh) have been of traditional Bengali woman with substance or back bone, so if you mean that by bold, so be it.” But in Mumbai bold means skin show. “Yes there was lot of it in Hate Stories, we always called it a bold film. But that explicitness was part of the story’s concept. You need to understand that because of woman’s body she is considered the weaker sex. My character is your next door confident journalist. She fell in love and was ditched so badly that she had to undergo an abortion which took away her child bearing abilities. For a woman the feeling to be a mother is very important. Hence she then decided to use the same body to extract revenge from the person who left her in this condition.” Looking ahead, Paoli wants to do all kinds of Bollywood films, “I don’t want to be typecast in one particular genre.” Since Bengali films are known to be more realistic, would you be able to satisfy the artist within you in the commercial Mumbai cinema space? “No, there is art even in your so called masala flicks as well. Bengali films are rooted only in the local social milieu while Bollywood has influences of pan India cultures. One of the big plus points of Mumbai films are that they have more glamour and are better stylized than Bengali films,” she ends.
