Vijay Varma finally talks about his break-up with Tamannaah Bhatia: ‘I would have preferred complete silence’

This feature details actor Vijay Varma's candid interview regarding the prolonged gap before his recent project, Gustaakh Ishq. Vijay reveals that the quiet spell was not due to a lack of work, but rather the overwhelming and "suffocating" public spotlight on his relationship and subsequent separation from actress Tamannaah Bhatia.

MUMBAI: When Vijay Varma returned to screens with Gustaakh Ishq, fans quickly noticed the unusually long quiet spell preceding its release.

For an actor known for having new projects dropping every few months, the pause felt uncharacteristically long.

However, Varma explained to the publication that the gap was not caused by a lack of professional opportunities; instead, it was the relentless spotlight on his personal life that prompted him to deliberately step away.

He admitted that the attention surrounding him had stopped focusing on his acting craft. Echoing the recent concerns raised by veteran actor Jaya Bachchan regarding intrusive paparazzi culture, Varma described the noise around his life as overwhelming.

"The work wasn’t coming out, so the conversation was about everything else," he stated, referring to the period when his relationship with Tamannaah Bhatia dominated the headlines.

Vijay elaborated that while he desired professional stillness, the nature of fame did not permit it. "I would have liked complete silence, but that’s not possible," he explained, noting that even though he avoided press interactions for over a year, the scrutiny never truly left him.

"I have not spoken to the press since IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, not given a single interview, yet the presence is all over and it’s beyond my control. But this is something that this generation is going to suffer from unless you live in a cave. Your decisions and your lives are being scrutinised every single day, so that’s how it is," Varma lamented. "I did need a gap, I needed more silence. But that’s something I didn’t have any control over."

As he returned with Gustaakh Ishq, many began calling this his "lover boy" era. Varma finds the label amusing but attributes it to how viewers perceived him during his much-talked-about relationship.

"I feel it was a byproduct of being in the spotlight for being in a public relationship. People saw me in a certain way," he conceded.

Reports of Tamannaah Bhatia and Vijay Varma’s separation first surfaced in March of this year.

They reportedly parted ways after dating for over two years, though sources maintain they plan to remain good friends.

The actors previously shared screen space in Sujoy Ghosh’s segment in Netflix’s Lust Stories 2, which premiered in June 2023.

Vijay's commitment to returning to his craft, despite the lack of "stillness," underscores a determined effort to shift the spotlight back to his performances, ensuring his considerable talent, rather than the scrutiny of his personal life, defines his respected position in the industry.
