10 movies to watch this Women's Day

Women in Bollywood have come a long way. From hopping around trees to taking up a stand for themselves, they have grown from being a mere prop to being the 'hero' of the movies. We pay tribute these feisty women of Bollywood by drumming up a list of ten movies to watch on Women's Day...take a look:

Queen:

This coming-of-age movie not only gave us one of the best women-centric movies, but also pushed Kangana Ranaut to the big league. Her realistic acting, coupled with a stellar storytelling makes this movie a classic that everybody must watch.

Mardaani:

Rani Mukerji's comeback flick had her playing a rough and tough police officer who can kick ass with as much ease her male counterparts. Despite typical masala elements in the movie, Rani's power packed acting makes it worth a watch. It was a BO hit and also fetched the talented actress a National Award for her performance.

Mary Kom:

It's not easy to be a women boxer in India, especially if you're from the North East and have to constantly fight a racist society. India's ace champion, Mary Kom, overcame the odds to become one of the most important figures in boxing. Priyanka Chopra not only got the nuances of the character right in the biopic Mary Kom, but also looked like a physically fit boxer in this 2014 hit.

Mother India:

One of the first few movies to showcase women in a strong character, Mother India broke all the stereotypes of its time. Peppered with powerful performances and a tight plot, it's become a cult classic in Bollywood. More and more women became aware of their rights and responsibilities, thanks to this wonderful movie. It was also the only time the real life couple of Sunil and Nargis Dutt played mother and son on the screen.

Aandhi:

Based on the life of Indira Gandhi, this political drama became the talking point for its gripping drama, the sensational chemistry between Suchitra Sen and Sanjeev Kumar. If melodrama isn't your cup of tea, do watch the movie for some brilliant compositions like Tera Bina Zindagi Se Koi.

Khoon Bhari Maang:

It's not just a story of an ugly duckling blossoming into an elegant swan, but also the sheer determination and strength of a woman wronged. Rekha, in her most powerful role ever, sets the screen ablaze with her dual avatars. It taught women all over the world to stand up for their rights.

Bhoomika:

This award-winning movie traces the journey of an actress who goes through emotional turmoil. From being a superstar to giving it all up, Smita Patil's character experiences a gamut of emotions. Needless to say, Patil was at her amazing best in this movie. Watching her is like going to a film school...

Arth:

Women are known for their strong resolve and determination. They can do anything if they put their minds to it. They can even bring their wandering husband back from the clutches of a seductress. This Mahesh Bhatt classic explores the dynamics between a married couple (Shabana Azmi and Kulbhushan Kharbhanda) and the entry of 'woh' (Smita Patil) into their lives. Both the women have strong roles and sizzling dialogues to make this movie a culturally and socially relevant one.

Damini:

When a woman of privilege comes across the gang rape of her maid, she is mortified to know that nobody is on her side. How Damini fights against all odds to bring justice for her maid forms the crux of this gripping drama. Meenakshi Sheshadri puts up a courageous show, while Sunny Deol makes a memorable cameo.

Kahaani:

It brought the heroine-oriented movies back to Bollywood. Vidya Balan, as a feisty woman on the search of her missing husband, puts up an award-winning performance. She single-handedly lifts the movie and makes it an astounding success. Hats off, Balan babe!
