We don’t believe in double meaning jokes: Kiku Sharda

Comedian Kiku Sharda gets talking on the popularity of The Kapil Sharma Show and his upcoming movie
Kiku Sharda

One look at this cute man and you start smiling. One interaction with him and you know he means business. The perfect blend of humour and intelligence, Kiku Sharda is the man of the hour.

After gaining fame with shows like F.I.R, Haatim, and Akbar Birbal among others, the actor enthralled everyone with his Palak act on Comedy Nights with Kapil. And with the show moving base to Sony Entertainment Television, Kiku is currently seen playing various drag characters on The Kapil Sharma Show (TKKS).

The show has been garnering great reviews from all quarters. Recently, we caught up with Kiku at a promotional event for his upcoming film 2016- The End. Getting into a candid chat, we spoke on the success of his shows, changing trends in comedy, movies and more...

With TKSS being declared the number one show last week, leaving behind all dailies, we asked Kiku how he felt about it. “I don’t want to say much on it as I feel we are a different genre completely. There is no competition between daily shows and ours. I would rather be happy that we topped in our field. And I am also happy for Sony as it’s growing. Super Dancer is also doing great and it’s a happy time for everyone. But for the team, the biggest achievement is that our audience has been loyal; celebs want to visit our show. These things matter more to us.”

There has been a massive change in the world of comedy, and we quizzed Kiku on the same. “Below the belt humour is not my cup of tea. Thankfully, as a team, we believe in putting across a clean show. If we have to say something not so pleasant, we say it to each other. Insulting someone or adding a double meaning joke might be an easy job but we don’t believe in it. And that’s why I love my show and the team so much. We stick to our grounds when it comes to indulging in such jokes.”

We quizzed him about his jail episode as well (he was taken into custody for mimicking Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh). He said, “I still maintain that if someone doesn’t like my jokes, I will apologise to them but my humour won’t change. You have every right to not like my jokes, you can also file a case against me, but it has to come with a procedure. You cannot just send me to jail. Although I was upset, I am pretty much over it.”

We also asked him about the issues with Colors and rival Krushna (Abhishek). To which he replied, “I don’t think there were any issues. They are doing their bit, we are doing ours. A healthy competition is always there, but no controversy.”

While elaborating on their stint abroad, Kiku shared, “It’s been amazing. I think everyone wants to smile and laugh. God must be blessing us for bringing joy in people’s life. While shooting in Mumbai, we might not realise but the love and respect TKSS has across the globe is mind blowing. The team is loved all around the world and that gives us more reasons to work harder.”

We further quizzed him on whether he is content with comedy roles. He said, “Well, what I am doing is a niche market and I enjoy doing it. After a hard day, I want to go back home happy and comedy gives me that outlet. Also, I have fun doing it.”

And finally, Kiku is all set with his new flick, 2016- The End. Sharing more about that, he said, “It is a completely entertaining film, with a beautiful concept. The film is based on the concept that if the world ends in a week, what would you do. Since I did not have an answer to it, I thought why not do the film and find out. One thing I realised was that whatever happens, your family will be your first priority. All the money, property will stand nowhere when you know you are going to die. It is only then that you realise that you want to spend your last few days with them.”

“We will also be promoting the film on The Kapil Sharma Show. I have been working for 14 years on TV and am glad that I got this opportunity in movies. Let’s see what happens next,” he concluded.

Best wishes to you, Kiku!
