Dekh Bhai Dekh is a situational comedy series which was popular amongst the masses in the 90’s. It was initially broadcast on DD but later shifted to Sony Television; the sitcom was a laughter riot. The show was directed by Anand Mahendroo and was written by M.M. Faruqui (Liliput). The show was produced by Jaya Bacchan under the banner (ABCL) Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited in the year 1993-94.
The cast of the show were Shekhar Suman, Navin Nischol, Deven Bhojwani, Farida Jalal, Urvashi Dholakia, Shammi and Karishma Acharya. The series was shot by a multi-camera setup with the footages edited on the spot by the Director. Dekh Bhai Dekh went on to compete with shows like Nukkad, Waghle Ki Duniya which were its predecessors and were runaway successes as well. The plot revolved around three generations of the Diwan family, who lived as an extended family in an ancestral bungalow in the suburbs of Mumbai.
The series takes the viewer through their various ups and downs. Their never-say-die attitude helped them overcome sibling rivalry, relationship troubles, business problems, irksome parents and in-laws. It was a show with a finely crafted script, perfect comic timing, equipped with brilliant performances, all in all Dekh Bhai Dekh was a family drama filled with fun. It becomes nostalgic when we recollect Sushma Seth as Sarla Diwan, as she was the senior most member of the house and most feared by others, but a prankster as well, the family realised that part much later though.
The veteran actress still has a penchant for acting. She is mostly seen in the theatre circles. The last film she appeared in was the Dharma productions 2012 release Student of the Year. The show also explores vivid relationships shared by the members of the house, be it the cute romance between Sameer (Shekhar Suman) and Sunita Diwan (Bhavna Balsavar), or the prankster brothers Sanju (Vishal Singh) and Sahil (Amar Upadhyay). The sweet bonding and the exchange of romantic stares between Suhasini and Balraj was also famous in the show.
And not to forget Deven Bhojani’s character who played the role of a house servant, garnered a lot of popularity, especially the peculiarity of his fast speech coupled with a thin voice. The character of Deven Bhojani as Kareema was the USP in the show. This was a truly a fun filled comedy family drama that kept a strong family bond by eschewing anything insult comedy which is observed these days.
