After 'Bareilly...', Swati Semwal to feature with Rajkummar again

Google Doodle honours Meena Kumari on her 85th birth anniversary

The beautiful face and expressive eyes of Meena Kumari have been captured in a Google doodle devoted to the late legendary actress Meena Kumari for her 85th birth anniversary on Wednesday.

"As shown in the doodle, Meena Kumari captivated audiences with her beautiful, expressive eyes," according to the official Google Doodle page.

Born in 1933, Meena Kumari grew up on camera, lighting up the silver screen from the age of four when she was known as Baby Meena. She became a formidable actor in Indian cinema, appearing in more than 90 films during her 38-year career.

She portrayed strong yet vulnerable women who made their own way through life, although they were often devastated by romance. This gave her the epithet 'Tragedy Queen'. She came to be known for sailing through complex emotions on-screen with ease.

Some of her memorable films include Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Pakeezah, Mere Apne, Aarti, Baiju Bawra, Parineeta, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, Foot Path, Dil Ek Mandir and Kaajal.

Meena Kumari was not only an iconic star of Hindi cinema, she was also a poet of great flair and delicacy.

The two actors, who have been quite private about their relationship, styled up for the Vogue Beauty Awards 2018, where they were feted with the title on Tuesday night.

"I'm glad Ali and I get to have this honour to be called the most beautiful couple for the year."

Ali said, "It feels nice to be named the couple of the year. To all others, all our stories are unique and priceless. It's a way of celebrating love among many a hate."

Anil Kapoor convinced Sonu Nigam to revisit Rafi's 'Badan pe sitare'

Singer Sonu Nigam, whose revamped version of Mohammed Rafi's "Badan pe sitare" released on the legendary singer's death anniversary on Tuesday, says if it was not for actor Anil Kapoor and his film Fanney Khan, he would not have tampered with a song by his "guru".

The song is a part of Fanney Khan, which is an ode to people with musical aspirations.

Sonu told a media publication over email, "I basically was avoiding doing it because I don't like to tamper with the original songs anymore. I've done enough of versions in my past. And it's Rafi sahab's song. Who wants to mess with it? He is my guru, he is my musical father. But Anil Kapoorji insisted and he requested me to do it. He said he was playing an ardent follower of Rafi sahab in the film, and that's why he wanted me to give him my voice."

Sonu loved the fact that Anil was playing a "Rafi sahab bhakt" in the film, directed by Atul Manjrekar.

"I loved the fact I'm giving my voice to a character in the film and he's a bhakt of Rafi sahab rather than just tampering with the song."

The other reason why Sonu got convinced was that he is an Anil Kapoor fan himself.

"I've been a huge fan of Anil Kapoorji throughout my childhood. Aur itna bada aadmi mujhe kuch kahe aur main unko mana kardu (such a big man asks me for something and I say no), it doesn't look good. He is also like a teacher to us. We have learnt so much from him and his life, the way he carries himself and his dedication to his craft," he added.

Sonu, who has given Bollywood some memorable songs, says if he did not have "substantial justification", he wouldn't have done the song.

"With all humility and with all respect, we dedicate this song to all the Rafi sahab followers like us," he added.

"Fanney Khan" is releasing on Friday.

Farhan Saeed, Rishi Rich team up for 'Maula'

Pakistani singer-songwriter-actor Farhan Saeed and British-Indian music producer Rishi Rich have collaborated for a song titled "Maula".

The track presented by VYRL Originals and composed, written and sung by Farhan is a contemporary power ballad.

Its official music video, shot in England, is a "mini-Bollywood" film, filled with twists and turns that showcases a tale of love that overcomes adverse circumstances.

"It's been a while since my last release but I'm very happy that the wait has ended with 'Maula'. This is the first time that Rishi and I have worked together and I loved the experience," Farhan, the former member of Jal band, said in a statement.

"Rishi has his own unique sound. The fusion of my music and his sound made something really interesting. I enjoyed the whole process of working with Rishi and so happy we collaborated for this song."

Rishi said Farhan's career has been "nothing short of stellar, both with the band Jal and then his solo work".

"It's been great working with him for the first time. We shared an amazing vibe in the studio and I'm thrilled with the way ‘Maula' has turned out," he added.

Director Mohit Suri called them "very professional musicians".

"The output is 'Maula' -- a contemporary ballad that brings out the best of both artistes. I'm pretty confident that their legion of fans from all over the world will be pleasantly surprised on this collaboration that drops on VYRL Originals today (Tuesday)."

Vinit Thakkar, Senior Vice President, Universal Music Group India and South Asia and EMI Records India, called both the artistes "incredibly talented".

I take higher cut in film profits, says Aamir

Superstar Aamir Khan says he takes a higher cut in films' profits because he risks his time on projects. But he does so only after the cost of each film is recovered in every aspect.

The actor-producer gave out the information on the inaugural day of the fifth Indian Screenwriters Conference on Wednesday.

During an interactive session on the topic ‘Writers VS Producers: Can they never be allies?', Aamir was asked, "There is a worrying trend that now the star has started taking about 80 per cent of the film, not profit but actually as his fees. Even though he is letting his fees go, it ultimately comes to the actor taking away 80 per cent. In 20 per cent how are we going to make a successful film?"

The actor replied, "My first rupee comes to me when the film's cost is recovered in every aspect, after the producer's and everybody else's money is recovered. That's the model I work with, and certainly, I take a higher cut in the percentage because I am risking my time on that, and I think producers are happy with that too."

Explaining the model, he shared, "The model that I work on is that, say a film costs Rs 100 crore to make. It consists of everything - cast, crew, production cost, post-production cost and everything comes in that. I don't take any money in that. I take nothing.

"So, when the film releases, I get zero money. And as it starts earning money, that money goes into P and A (Promotions and Advertising), which is over and above Rs 100 crore. Say P and A is Rs 25 crore, it then goes into recovering that.

"Once P and A is recovered, the producer has recovered his money, and everybody has got their fees...then I go into the percentage of profits. This way, there is no way that the producer can lose any money. And if for some reason, the film has not recovered the money, that it didn't do well, then I don't get any money," he said.

Being part of some of the iconic films like Dangal, PK, 3 Idiots and Lagaan, Aamir believes that the script plays an important role in the success of a film.

"I think the script is the foundation (of a film) and I make sure that once I love the story and the film is in the making, people who are investing money should not be in loss. I don't allow the producer to shoulder the responsibility alone," he said.

He believes that sharing the responsibility of making the film commercially successful also secures his career and builds trust with the producers and financiers of films.

"I think this is the best business model for film and our business because in most of my films, if producer is not losing money, it is but obvious that he will sign me for the next film. That is why I always ensure that if I am signed in a film, there is no loss," he said.

Citing the example of the 2001 film Lagaan, Aamir said, "Since that film was one of the expensive films of that time and was breaking a lot of rules of mainstream Indian cinema and that is why I felt the importance of taking the responsibility.

"That apart, I know when I come on board, producers and financiers do not question me on the subject I chose for a film because they trust me, they have faith in me. That is why I want to ensure the profit."
