Salim Khan's 'clear-cut instruction' about his kids' girlfriends

Superstar Salman Khan says his father Salim Khan had given him a "clear-cut instruction" when it comes to girlfriends.

While shooting for Dus Ka Dum - Dumdaar Weekend, hosted by Salman, he asked celebrity guests a question - "How many per cent of Indians are scolded by policemen for romancing in public?" - as part of the game show.

Before the guests could answer, Salman said it is "very sad" to see couples spending time with each other in public places, read a statement.

"These couples are helpless as there are around eight-10 people in a small house. These youngsters cannot afford to book a hotel as the society takes it in other way. My father gave me a clear-cut instruction when it came to girlfriends. He gave us the permission to spend time at home rather than roaming around the city," said Salman, who was romantically linked to actresses Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Katrina Kaif.

"The same instruction was applicable to my sisters as well. If they have any good man in their life, they should first tell their parents and not hide anything from them. He has given us the right to take the decision on whom to marry and whom not to marry," he added.

Salman has two brothers - Sohail and Arbaaz, and two sisters - Arpita and Alvira.

'Sui Dhaaga' logo made in 15 different art forms

In an effort to celebrate the rich and diverse handicrafts of India, the team of upcoming Bollywood film Sui Dhaaga - Made In India reached out to local artisans and craftsmen from across the country to create the logo of the film in their unique stitching styles.

The logo's launch on Tuesday coincides with the National Handloom Day.

"We reached out to 15 uniquely skilled artists/artist groups who helped us design our film logo. It has been an exhaustive and most rewarding experience for all of us at Yash Raj Films (YRF)," Manan Mehta, Vice President - Marketing and Merchandising, YRF, said in a statement.

It took the team six months to plan, research and execute the film's logo in 15 different styles, including in hand needlework forms of Kashida and Sozni from Kashmir, colourful Phulkari from Punjab, the intricate thread work forms Rabari and Mochi Bharat from Gujarat, Phool Patti from Uttar Pradesh and Zardozi work from Lucknow.

It has also been created in Rajasthan's prominent crafts like Aari, Banjara and Gota Patti, Tamil Nadu's popular Toda style and Karnataka's Kasuti design.

From the east, the film's logo has been made in Pipli style from Odisha and handloom work from Assam, Kantha stitch work from West Bengal.

The makers hope Sui Dhaaga creates awareness of India's culture amongst today's youth.

Starring Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma, the film is about finding love and respect through self-reliance. Its plot is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy and takes a leaf out of the Make In India campaign.

Directed by Sharat Kataria and produced by Maneesh Sharma, Sui Dhaaga will release on 28 September.

An artiste creates an alternate reality: A.R. Rahman

Known for his powerful music and introvert nature, Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman says that as an artiste, he prefers to create an alternate reality as opposed to expressing an opinion on the troubled socio-political scenario worldwide.

Rahman mostly refrains from commenting on any current affairs like many celebrities.

Asked if the socio-political situations affect him, Rahman said, "I think this is a golden time for the artiste to express, to unify people... The artiste inside you should wake up now, this is our time. There should be a revolution now. I feel more inspired now in terms of the adversity that is happening, because an artiste is the one who does not reflect the reality... He creates an alternate reality.

"So when people are going for a war, the artiste makes an alternate reality of peace. So, my work of art should be more beautiful when the world around me is ugly with brutality."

Citing the reference of some of the historical music pieces, the Dil Se and Slumdog Millionaire fame composer said, "I think the best piece of art comes to an artiste when the society is chaotic, troubled and noisy. It is a blessing and a curse, and that is when the greatest symphony has been written.

"When Germany went to war against Britain, the greatest Beethoven stuff has happened. There is a history behind the music."

Rahman spoke as he promoted the Amazon Prime Video show Harmony With A.R. Rahman, which features musicians from four parts of India - Maharashtra, Kerala, Sikkim and Manipur. He is hosting the show, which will go live on 15 August.

He says the four places were chosen as "these are some of the ignored areas of our country and people do not care much about their music, people and culture".

"They are connected somewhere to make our country, culturally a diverse one," said Rahman.

He believes that human stories always connect people along with the music. When he went to these places and got to know the stories behind people's musical journey, he was fascinated.

"These musicians are keeping some old traditions alive, meeting the expectation of their fathers by playing the music. When we play music professionally, there are certain things that we do -- there is a competitive spirit, things like who is playing something faster than the other.

"On the other hand, I met musicians from these regions who are told not to take it professionally because music is something very spiritual. They are doing it for the love of it. These qualities are lost in the mainstream. And that impressed me." Was the intention behind the show to establish the co-existence of different music that goes beyond Bollywood?

"Not only music, but the continuous flow of human life... The idea is to project the diversity that makes India the country it is."

While his involvement in mainstream Bollywood is shifting to only selective projects, Rahman is utilising his creative energy to expand his horizon beyond being a musician.

"I am learning about storytelling, script writing and film production because of my production house. I do not want to be naive about things as a producer. If I am asking a film director to change something in his piece of work, I should pinpoint the right thing that is possible to change. So that in the difference of thought, we can find a creative solution."

Two films -- 99 Songs and Le Musk (India's first virtual reality film) -- are there on the pipeline from his production house.

Apart from making a mark for Indian music on the global map, Rahman also contributes to philanthropic work, which he considers an extension of the "evolution of humanity."

Let music bring countries together: Tulsi Kumar on singing with Atif Aslam

Singer Tulsi Kumar, who has sung a duet with Pakistani singer Atif Aslam for a forthcoming Bollywood film, says music connects people universally and it has the power to connect countries together.

Tulsi has sung "Paniyon sa" with Atif in the John Abraham-starrer Satyameva Jayate.

What does it mean for her to have sung with a Pakistani artiste at a time when collaborative art/music between India and Pakistan is far and few?

"I actually believe music has no boundaries and that's the beauty of any kind of art. I have collaborated with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan sahab back in 2010 for one of the biggest tracks of my career 'Tum jo aaye zindagi mein'. Now it's a collaboration with Atif Aslam for 'Paniyon sa'," Tulsi told a leading publication in an email interview from Mumbai.

"I don't think so we should have personal issues of countries involved with music. Music is free from boundaries and sees no difference in two countries. I think music is something which connects people and their emotions worldwide and I think it's great to collaborate with various talented artistes irrespective of the country they belong to. Let music do all the talking and healing and bring the countries together," she added.

Satyameva Jayate, releasing on 15 August, marks two firsts for Tulsi -- a song with Atif as well as a romantic Sufi track "Tere jaisa".

"Both these songs are very special to me and especially the Sufi track is something that I have done for the first time. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was a learning experience for me," she added.

As a music artiste, Tulsi has dabbled in soft romantic ballads, foot-tapping dance numbers, old classic retro or unplugged and now Sufi. Does she believe versatility is the key to a singer today or having one's own signature style?

"My signature style is soft romantic ballads or the unplugged zone of songs. Sufi also more or less falls in the same zone, so I would call that my forte. But I think it's good to try out different kind of songs as you don't know what zone your voice fits in and you realise that after years," she said.

She also loves attempting dance numbers.

"A different tone and grunge of my voice comes across in those songs and a lot of times when people hear me in a song like 'Nachange saari raat' or a ‘Saiyaan superstar', they are pretty shocked that who is this singer. So I think it's kind of an achievement if you can sound different and fresh in every given track. However, every artiste and singer has his or her own forte and for me that's my romantic side, but I love doing different zones and genres of songs.

Tulsi is the daughter of late Indian music mogul Gulshan Kumar, on whose life a biopic is in the works.

"My father's biopic is a very emotional and binding project for my family. We all will be closely attached to this because it will be showcasing my father's journey as to how he began and where he reached within no time.

"His entire journey will be covered and I will contribute to the film in every way possible way. More than anything else, it's a project that is not just close to my heart but the entire Kumar family," she added.

Aamir Khan and T-Series will release the biopic on the T-Series founder on Christmas 2019.
