Actor Saif Ali Khan holds an opinion about sensitive subjects like politics and religion and believes in expressing the same with no take-backs. Take a look at all the times his statements sparked controversy

MUMBAI: Social media nowadays is very sensitive, one has to think many times before making any sort of remarks. One's statements are permanent and can be held against them in any space or time. No matter how well-versed you are with a particular subject, you are likely to get trolled if your context seems to be slightly incomprehensive. Even the most well-read celebs like Saif Ali Khan become the target of the troll army and get shouted for their remarks.

The actor is known for his knack for all things intellectual and likes to keep himself up to date with worldly affairs. His library from his Bombay residence is enough to speak for his bookish self. But someone like him who drowns in the world of books has been caught in ugly situations for not mastering the art of words.

His statements during film promotions and other public appearances like interviews have been scrutinised and further condemned. The Jawaani Janeman actor has made some pretty bold remarks with no take-backs but the one that put him on the centre stage of social media backlash was when he dimmed the 'concept' of 'India' before British rule.

"There was no concept of India until British came"

In an interview, renowned film critic Anupama Chopra, Saif Ali Khan commented that before the British came to India, there was no concept of our homeland as such. His statement did not sit well with some politicians and triggered many social media users. Renowned author, Tarek Fatah was amongst the first ones to pin-point this controversial statement and in light of the same, he penned the following tweet:

Sonu Nigam Azaan row

During an on-going debate on Azaan tweets shared by Sonu Nigam, actor Saif Ali Khan expressed that he found the singer's remarks a bit aggressive. Sonu Nigam had reportedly tweeted: "God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India". This particular tweet was followed by a couple of others were he allegedly called religion 'gundagardi".

In an interview with Indian Express, on being asked by Sonu's claims on Azaan, Saif said: "I also understand the amplification of the sound during azaan comes from insecurity. Not just here but also in Israel apparently where three different religions co-exist. It’s been written about so I believe it’s the same. As a minority, you would like to make your presence felt and hopefully accepted. If someone says that it should be extinguished, it will make some people a little uncomfortable.".

He further went on to add that religion should be a 'private affair' and we should maintain our secular fabric. While many have filtred their words on subjects like religion and related politics, Saif Ali Khan has managed to put forth his blunt opinion at all times.
