MUMBAI: For the record, the Hindi entertainment industry tops in terms of keeping at least around 80% of the lower-upper middle class households entertained on a daily basis, owing to the fact that the storylines and associated activities are greatly relatable for their viewers.

Unlike present days with all the online streaming services' availability, the last two-three decades were exponentially dependent on television entertainment as a source of occasional breaks and timepass. A particular set of TV shows left behind a highly impactful trail for their viewers to follow especially in terms of their  traditionally Indian storylines and lead-lineups.

In present days, the addition of the streaming services just added on to the already existing hype of these shows as youngsters are avidly accessing these sites more, thus adding on to the viewership counts. The availability of the old classic soaps online along with the new ones gives individuals the liberty of watching their episodes anytime, anywhere. Talking about shows these days, a hell lot of emphasis is provided on changes and mind-broadening concepts of thrashing old-school social protocols aiming at inviting mass-acceptance of logic-based situational crises. After all, progression is the very factor both youngsters, adults and aged find appealing about today's shows.

Hence, every decade, generation, era, etc. have come up with their own sets of hit and superhit shows, be that regular soaps or reality shows.

Today, let's take a note of the most impactful Hindi soaps so far that are still popular and widely reckoned, even though some of them have gone off-air by now:

1. Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi

[[{"fid":"15653689","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"1":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":400,"width":711,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"1"}}]]

The most popular Hindi serial of the early '00s featured actors Smriti Irani, Amar Upadhyay and Ronit Roy in poignant roles along with many others (as the show was truly based on the story of a business class - joint-family). Be it protagonist Tulsi (played by Smriti) -  Mihir's (played by Amar/ Ronit) love-story, saas-bahu drama mother-son's separation sequence or through the focus on Mihir's extra-marital affairs, this one show never lacked a scope of interest-loss owing to which, this show entertained it's audience for a decade at a stretch. Such was the impact that after almost another decade since it's commencement, fans still can't get over the show's 'justice' oriented impact and even young people who have never watched a single episode know about these classic characters through viral meme templates and video clips which circulate on the internet every now and then.

2. Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii

[[{"fid":"15653779","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"2":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":263,"width":377,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"2"}}]]

This show ran parallel to KSBKBT. Being another classic Balaji Telefilms' creation, this show garnered immense love and fame for portraying the concept of a joint family staying in harmony and collectively taking against all odds and negativity around them. The bond and understanding shared amid the lead duo of Parvati (played by Sakshi Tanwar) and Om (played by Kiran Karmakar) set major couple goals for the viewers back then. Again portraying the battle between fair and unfair as the show's main theme, KGGK was immensely loved by the audience. The OG viewers of these two aforementioned shows can never forget their epic crossovers at unprecedented moments, which made both these shows extremely precious for their viewers.

3. Sasural Simar Ka

[[{"fid":"15654149","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"3":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":360,"width":640,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"3"}}]]

This is one of the Colors TV classics that outdid the other shows in the same network. The show premiered on 25 April 2011 and starred Dipika Kakar, , Avika Gor, Shoaib Ibrahim and Dheeraj Dhoopar in poignant roles amongst other characters. Shoaib used to portray the role of the male protagonist, who eventually got replaced by Dheeraj Dhoopar for the same. Coming to it's storyline, the show stuck on to the very same context of good triumphing over evil and a daughter-in-law's compromises and bravery to safeguard her family against all evils. Such was the show's  popularity and reception by it's audience that a reboot season is underway, while it's makers are trying their best to fix-up the OG cast.

4. Balika Vadhu

[[{"fid":"15654159","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"4":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":360,"width":640,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"4"}}]]

Highlighting on a more social issue like 'child-marriage', Balika Vadhu managed to gather innumerable accolades from it's critics, judges and viewers for portraying the social crisis and the life of a child-bride who's married-off in a tender age of their lives, through the show's protagonist's character role named 'Anandi', whose role was portrayed by the then child actress Avika Gor. The child's marriage, physical, biological, mental and emotional growth and her relationship with her husband and in-laws (both as a kid and later, as an adult).

5. Sarabhai vs Sarabhai

[[{"fid":"15654189","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"5":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":404,"width":647,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"5"}}]]

This classic Hindi sitcom series has absolutely no haters as this show managed to entertain almost everyone by taking subtle jibes at the societal strata through satires, sarcasms and gestures. The most loved duo of the show was that of the mother-in-law - daughter-in-law's i.e. Monisha Sarabhai (played by Rupali Ganguly) and Maya Sarabhai (played by Ratna Pathak Shah), owing to their non-stop sarcastic banters and quarrels over petty and household issues.  The absence of wholesome sitcoms like this makes it the most memorable and cherished one!

6. Kasautii Zindagi Kay

[[{"fid":"15654199","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"6":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":720,"width":1280,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"6"}}]]

The show who's core was based on the union of soulmates by overcoming the hardest of the hurdles in their paths is Ekta Kapoor's this inter-cultural romantic classic, based on the story of a Bengali boy and a non-Bengali girl who's love blossoms in the city of Kolkata. That luring tendency of a lover's true desire of union to being separated by fate was the major factor this show was cherished as a household fairytale. Another plus-point behind this show's magnum response is of it's airing during the prime-time of 8pm. Having featured 2 seasons so far, both the stories revolved around the same concept of lover's union and showcased the tragic love-stories of Prerna Sharma and Anurag Basu both the times (Shweta Tiwari-Cezanne Khan in S1 and Erica Fernandes-Parth Samthaan in S2). A major highlight of the show's both seasons was the poignant villain - Komolika, who knew nothing about life other than eye-grabbing make-up regimes, perfection and seeking vengeance. She added that 'oomph' factor in the show everytime she made her on-screen presence (played by Urvashi Dholakia in S1 and Hina Khan/  Aamna Sharif in S2).

7. Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?

[[{"fid":"15654209","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"7":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":360,"width":640,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"7"}}]]

Another typical small-screen love-drama who's storyline highlighted on societal differences, what garnered the show's immense popularity was actors Sanaya Irani and Barun Sobti's 'too-hot-to-handle' on-screen pairing, chemistry and romance, as if the duo could light their sets on fire everytime they approached each other romantically. Focussing on the concept of 'opposites attract each other', the union of the opposite characters of Khushi Kumari Gupta and Arnav Singh Raizaada was the very oomph factor of the entire show.

8. Dil Mill Gaye

[[{"fid":"15654219","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"8":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":211,"width":487,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"8"}}]]

The youth show that garnered major household fame by chance was Star One's DMG. This show had a crazy fan-following again owing to the mad hype behind the show's star casts -  Sanaya Irani, Mohit Malhotra, Ridhima Pandit and the very handsome hunk of the television industry -  Karan Singh Grover. Revolving around the blossoming and maturing of romance amid 2 lead couples, the four characters are individually aspirant doctors. The unique concept and the young romance made DMG hit the right mark amid both it's TG and outsiders.

10. Saath Nibhana Saathiya

[[{"fid":"15654229","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"9":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":237,"width":421,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"9"}}]]

One of the most popular Hindi TV shows of the last decade was undoubtedly SNS and the reason behind it is even more bizzare as it does not rests on either the storyline, cast, characters or the on-screen chemistry of the lead couples. The show went on being more famous amid the youngsters only through memes that went viral. Coming to the 5 main characters, 4 of them made up the show's 2 leading couples of Gopi-Ahem and Rashi-Jiggar , while the 5th character was their mother/ aunt-in-law, who went by the name Kokila Modi. Coming back to the young leads,  Gopi Modi was initially a lowkey character who was totally illiterate and had no self-confidence while Rashi was a more educated and aware individual who wanted to harm her cousin sister. Owing to this info, there was a scene wherein Gopi was shown washing her husband's laptop with detergent (as if she's washing his clothes) and then hanging it upside down for drying along the clothes' rope. This one scene crashed the entire internet as literally no one could keep calm over this nuisance and in no time, clips and memes on the same started doing it's rounds. After some time, the show again bounced-up arbitrarily as Rashi went popular this time by placing an empty pressure-cooker on a lit gas to defame Gopi behind the mishap. Taking the raw clip, famous YouTuber and musician Yashraj Mukhate even dedicated a song to the scene by morphing it's dialogues into rap-like lyrics. Again, the internet went bonkers over the same. It so happened that owing to the show's topmost-trend on Twitter that it's makers actually came up with it's reboot season. Viral impacts can be this level crazy at times...

11. Diya Aur Baati Hum

[[{"fid":"15654259","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"10":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":300,"width":400,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"10"}}]]

The deviant show of all, DABH is one of it's first kinds wherein a practically ambitious female lead was portrayed who's perfect counter-role was played by the show's male lead instead, as if marital equilibrium can be attained by switching the regular gender-based roles amid the characters. The female lead Sandhya toiled hard day and night to become an IPS officer while her counter-part and husband Sooraj followed his passion of turning a chef and opening a food joint. This role-reversal being progressively displayed under regressive household and societal conditions helped garner massive attention.

12. Naagin

[[{"fid":"15654279","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"11":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":300,"width":400,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"11"}}]]

Ekta Kapoor's most-popular supernatural drama's saga started-off with actress Mouni Roy's killer vibes, attitude and charm as the show's lead character, i.e. the Naagin itself. The audience could not get enough of either her or any of the other actresses who went ahead to portray the same role in it's future installments. From actresses Hina Khan to Nia Sharma, Surbhi Jyoti and lately, Surbhi Chandna, everybody delivered the best of their acting chops for their roles and lead the show victorious for it's audience in terms of them crazy VFXs for displaying realistic-animal movements, thus, giving a sci-fi touch-up to the series.

13. Anupamaa

[[{"fid":"15654289","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false},"link_text":null,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"12":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":false,"field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":false}},"attributes":{"height":280,"width":425,"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"12"}}]]

Lastly, the boss show of current times - Anupamaa is nailing at in the topmost position of the TRP charts for showcasing a more realistic concept of a struggle story before it's audience through that of it's female lead character, who showcases the everyday struggles of a homemaker of a typical Indian upper middle-class household. The concept, storyline and acting chops of all the actors (especially Rupali Ganguly's, Sudhanshu Pandey's, Madalsa Sharma's, Paras Kalnawat's and that of every others) have totally served the serial's wholesome purpose of drawing legitimate attention towards a homemaker's immense and unpaid efforts behind building and maintaining her family, especially when the males of her house work outdoors, the family members take her for granted in-terms of her unpaid services and her innumerable compromises that go unheard. This show influences and enables every Indian homemaker to follow and/ or catch-up their dreams or passions from wherever they'd last sacrificed it.
