MUMBAI: Director Shakun Batra talks about his upcoming film Gehraiyaan. The director speaks about the story of the film, what kind of projects interests him and how the casting of the actor Dhairya Karwa was done for the film.
How important was it for you to show this story in today’s time?
Certainly, the stories like this haven’t been explored earlier. I am not making this movie just because we are in today's time. Looking back there have been movies like Lamhe, Silsila, and Masoom and also Devdas which showed extremely complicated relationships. So I feel there has been a big gap where we have not shown such kinds of movies. I always thought to bring such movies and stories back to the audience.
Are you choosy about the projects you select?
I generally hope that I can go faster. There is nothing, I enjoy about waiting for so long. This one especially got delayed because of Covid. There was something else I was planning to come up with but the time got extended. But really I hope that I can get my next one soon and hopefully come out quicker next time.
How was Dhairya Karwa’s casting done for the film?
I saw his audition tape and other auditions as well. There were multiple rounds of auditions involved. He went through 3 or 4 rounds of auditions. Just like how to find somebody new, he wasn’t somebody who is new before. My casting director and I did a bunch of auditions and finally decided to set on him.
As a filmmaker what are the projects you are looking at next?
I don't have a locked project what I am doing next. What interests me is like following my curiosity about relationships and about people. What interests me is something like which is not a run a mill, not so assembly line, so I am always looking for that kind of steps which is not normal.
