MUMBAI : Fashion designer Masaba Gupta, who is the love child of Neena Gupta and West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards, was raised as a single mother by the Bollywood actress.

In an interview with a portal, she spoke about the struggle that she faces as a businesswoman, her fears, and more.

You've mentioned how you find validation through work. But there are days when you give your 100 percent, but it falls short. How do you find your ground on those days?

“It's tough. When you're running a business, there are ups and downs. I've established a strong support system at my home with my family and friends. Nothing goes under the carpet as I deal with it myself. My go-to person is always my mother or my best friend Neha.”

You've witnessed your mother going through a lot. How did you find courage to let loose, fall in love, and move ahead in your life?

“Even though she went through a lot, there are many things to be grateful for. There was food on the table and friends to celebrate with. Our health was good, and work was also on. I believe that kids should not take on the baggage of their parents. As kids, we should always remember that we're not our parents but individual people. I see things for what they are!”

Do you still face struggles as a businesswoman at this stage of your life?

“No, not anymore. People have been nothing but kind. People from the corporate, finance, and fashion have been very open and encouraging. Back in the day, there were challenges, but when people see your consistency and efforts, you are valued.”

What fears do you have in terms of work and business?

“The only fear I have is of becoming complacent. I'm a workaholic and I enjoy doing 100 things a day. I have very few interests outside of work. I don't want to be mediocre and laidback. A lot of people think that they've arrived when they hit a certain milestone, but that's just the superiority complex that kicks in. If you lose humility in life, then everything can go south. I think arrogance is the worst quality.”

What is that one thing that you think you've imbibed from your mother?

“She's a survivor! She has a never-say-die spirit. She's 67, and she's just about starting again! So that's the one thing that I've learnt from her.”

Good luck, Masaba!
