Padmapriya on South vs Bollywood debate; “I think it’s about bringing the right talent and right kind of stories” – Exclusive

Padmapriya has worked in many South India films especially Malayalam movies. The actress also featured in Bollywood film Chef which starred Saif Ali Khan as the male lead. TellyChakkar recently interacted with Padmapriya and spoke to her about taking a break, South vs Bollywood debate, and more…

MUMBAI:Padmapriya is one of the famous names down South. The actress is currently busy garnering praises for her performance in Wonder Women. Before Wonder Women, she was seen in a Malayalam movie titled Oru Thekkan Thallu Case which released in September this year.

The actress was on a break for a few years, and before Oru Thekkan Thallu Case, her last release was Hindi film Chef which starred Saif Ali Khan as the male lead. TellyChakkar recently interacted with Padmapriya and spoke to her about taking a break, South vs Bollywood debate, and more…

This year has been kind of a comeback for you and people are going to see you after a long gap…

No it’s not a comeback. I have always seen that when filmmakers take a time out, we never ask them about making a comeback, but actors do get asked about it, especially the female actors. I have been in the industry for 13 years, I took a break, and Chef happened along the way, and I wasn’t ready to still come back. Chef happened by itself, and I am a big fan of Saif and I enjoyed working with Raja Krishna Menon. Not all films we do are to attain a certain career objective. As a full time professional I have been back doing films since last October and those are coming out now.

Many Hindi dubbed versions of South films have been doing well at the box office, and there’s a debate that maybe South will take over Bollywood. What’s your take on that?

At the end we are trying to tell great stories and we should try and focus on doing that no matter where it is coming from. For example, Wonder Women is an Indian English film. I think what is important is what we are trying to say as stories and how we are saying it. I genuinely feel that. I have lots of friends here (Hindi film industry) who are extremely talented and I have lots of friends back in the South who are also extremely talented. I think it’s about bringing the right talent and right kind of stories; that does the magic.

After the break, when you came back on the sets did you find any difference as it would have been a pre and post pandemic situation for you?

I have never been away from the industry when I took a break; I was just not shooting in front of the camera. When we were shooting Wonder Women, we shot it during the peak of the Delta wave, so we actually even had to break in between. I personally don’t see any difference apart from the mask and the precautions, and the fact that people have started talking about health and safety on set which was rarely spoken about.
