MUMBAI: In 2022, two sequels that did well at the box office were Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and Drishyam 2. There was one more sequel from which moviegoers had high expectations, but the film didn’t leave a mark in the audiences’ hearts and even at the box office. We are talking about Ek Villain Returns which starred John Abraham, Arjun Kapoor, Disha Patani, and Tara Sutaria.
Ek Villain Returns was a sequel to the 2014 release Ek Villain which starred Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor, and Riteish Deshmukh in the lead roles. The first installment was a super hit at the box office with a collection of Rs. 105.62 crore.
The sequel had failed to make a mark at the box office. Reportedly, Ek Villain Returns was made on a budget of Rs. 65 crore. It took an opening of Rs. 7.05 crore, and the lifetime collection of the film in India was 41.69 crore net. The worldwide gross collection of the film was Rs. 68.64 crores that also doesn’t make it a hit.
When Ek Villain was released in 2014, the film had received positive reviews and the music had created a great pre-release buzz, so that’s why it took the box office by storm. Meanwhile, the pre-release buzz about EK Villain Returns was not great. Neither the trailer nor the songs grabbed people’s attention. So, maybe that’s why the film failed to make a mark at the box office.
Now, all eyes are on John Abraham starrer Pathaan which is slated to release on 25th January 2023. The movie also stars Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles.
