MUMBAI: The horror series Adhura started streaming on Amazon Prime Video a few days ago. The series stars Rasika Duggal and Ishwak Singh in the lead roles and it is directed by Gauravv K Chawla and Ananya Banerjee.
TellyChakkar recently interacted with one of the directors of the show, Ananya Banerjee, and spoke to her about the series and more…
Watching a horror movie in a theatre is a very different experience. But, when you make a horror OTT series, is that thing in mind that this won’t be seen on a big screen, but we still have that perfect horror effect to it?
I think the horror genre is one of the only genres that doesn't lose any of its quality in translation whether it’s a theatre or the OTT platform. Yes, the sound design, visuals, and watching it on that large theatre screens is a great experience and makes you feel even more excited to watch it. Horror is also very largely and historically watched in the comfort of people’s homes like in privacy, making the room dark and watching it alone. So, in terms of feeling, horror translates very well whether it is theatre or OTT.
She further said…
We didn’t have any conscious design that we are making for OTT except for technical aspects like sound and colour. We did have a conscious effort that the theme should not be too dark because people don’t control the lighting in their rooms. So, it should not be like they can’t see anything in the scene.
You and Gauravv have co-directed the series. So, were there disagreements between you both, and how did you manage it?
Of course, there are disagreements. I think we should have disagreements in any sort of creative endeavour which is based on collaboration because if you don’t, I don’t think you are pushing each other as a team. So yes, through our prep and planning, and all the developments we went through before we went to set, there were a lot of disagreements. It’s also not about egos but it’s about what is best for the show.
Ananya added…
Also, Gauravv and I shoot separately, so it’s not that we are together on that set and there are problems going on (laughs). We shoot with two separate units and we are very clear with what the vision is.
