MUMBAI: Despite being in theatres for 30 days, Atlee Kumar’s Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan is still pulling in respectable box office revenue.
While Anil Sharma’s Gadar 2, another Hindi blockbuster of the year, saw a significant drop in its earnings after the first month, Jawan is projected to perform well even during the upcoming weekend. The film’s success also highlights Atlee’s skill in creating mass entertainers that attract a large number of audiences to theatres.
Meanwhile, Atlee recently shared his experience of meeting SRK for the first time, expressing his initial nervousness about being photographed alongside King Khan.
He recalled receiving a call from Red Chillies shortly after the release of his film Bigil, where he was informed that Shah Rukh wished to meet him. During their meeting, Atlee mentioned that the superstar expressed his interest in collaborating with him.
“We started in 2019. He came to Chennai, and we had a brief meeting at my office. On his way back, he informed me that he was going to watch an IPL game and asked me to join him. I told him that if I went along, some news or a photo would come out, and his reply was, ‘Yeah, we are working together, let the world know.’ That one image that came out then took me to the greatest responsibility, to provide him with the greatest love letter, and that’s Jawan,” he said while taking part in an edition of the India Today Conclave.
When asked if he is an ‘anti-establishment’ director, Atlee denied it and instead characterised himself as a ‘layman’. He explained, “It is my voice, it is the common man’s voice…”.
When it was brought to his attention that both the BJP and the Congress have interpreted the film’s message in their favour, Atlee responded, “You have to be very responsible as a citizen, and I’m not specifying anything… You should know the value of your vote, how to vote, and on what basis you should come to the conclusion of who to vote for. It’s just a manual. We describe what your responsibility is.”
Asked if the film is about any political party’s operations in particular, Atlee said that the monologue delivered by Shah Rukh’s Azaad at the end of the film should be relevant ‘even 100 years from now’.
He concluded, “If a coach teaches a student how to bowl, it’s not for the next match, it’s for a lifetime. I’m saying a message for a lifetime, my films should stand for 100 years.”
