Almost a year and a half later, the two filed petitions for divorce by mutual consent. Soon, their case will be heard. The two have been living separately for the past two years. After the announcement, they were seen at their sons, Yatra and Linga's school events.

On January 17, 2022, Dhanush announced their separation on X. The two parted ways after 18 years of marriage.

His statement read, "18 years of togetherness as friends, couple, as parents and well wishers to each other. The journey has been of growth, understanding, adjusting and adapting. Today we stand at a place where our paths separate. Aishwaryaa and I have decided to part ways as a couple and take time to understand us as individuals for the better (sic)."

Aishwarya sent the same message on her social media accounts. To deal with their split, the two asked for privacy. In 2004, at the ages of 21 and 23, respectively, Dhanush and Aishwarya tied the knot in an extravagant ceremony. The two are now parents to two sons, Yatra and Linga.

Dhanush and Aishwarya have focused on their professions since their split. With "Lal Salaam," Aishwarya returned to directing, and Rajinikanth made a lengthy guest appearance. Dhanush gave a shout-out to the film as well.

Dhanush has been quite busy at work, balancing his directorial endeavors and several acting roles. "Raayan," his next film, is his second feature film as director.
