MUMBAI: The critically acclaimed Indian film "Girls Will Be Girls," directed by Shuchi Talati and produced by renowned actors Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal, is set for a groundbreaking release in France, followed by a UK release at the end of this month. This marks an unprecedented achievement for an Indian film of this scale, making waves internationally before its domestic debut.

Following its remarkable success at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it garnered the Audience Award in the World Cinema Dramatic category and the Special Jury Award for Acting for lead actor Preeti Panigrahi, "Girls Will Be Girls" has continued to capture global attention. The film was also showcased at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival this year and at the Sundance UK chapter, further cementing its international acclaim. Indie-darling actress Kani Kustruti, star of  Payal Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light', the winner of this year's Cannes Grand Prix, is the other lead in 'Girls Will Be Girls'.

"Girls Will Be Girls" is a compelling coming-of-age drama that delves into the life of 16-year-old Mira, portrayed by Preeti Panigrahi and her tense relationship with her mother in the hormonal throes of nascent adulthood. Set against the backdrop of a strict boarding school in the Himalayas, the film explores Mira's journey of teenage love through the lens of societal judgement of female desire. Themes of mother-daughter affection and rivalry, bodily autonomy, and generational female awakening are poignantly portrayed in this powerful narrative.

Expressing her excitement about the film's international release, Richa Chadha said, "We are incredibly proud to see 'Girls Will Be Girls' embraced warmly on a global platform. The film's themes resonate universally, and we are excited for audiences in France and the UK to be among the first to experience it. We have been extremely elated with all the global recognition the film has been receiving including the wins at Sundance. The film also recently screened at the UK chapter of Sundance. Now we are eagerly anticipating the moment when viewers in India can watch it too towards the end of this year”.

"Girls Will Be Girls" is an Indo-French co-production between India's Pushing Buttons Studios,  France's Dolce Vita Films and Blink Digital.

The film's international release underscores the global appeal of it's story, paving the way for more Indian films to reach broader audiences. "Girls Will Be Girls" is set to make a lasting impact, continuing its journey across the world.
