MUMBAI : A tragedy can occasionally serve as the catalyst for a number of endeavors, including a multi-season streaming series. The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, a Netflix series directed by director Karan Johar, features a backstory that begins with him and the show's main cast members—Bhavana Panday, Maheep Kapoor, Neelam Kothari Soni, and Seema Sajdeh—en route to a funeral.

The director said in an interview with Sucharita that he thought the women's spirit and camaraderie ought to be documented for a show after hearing them talk about their funeral clothes and being astonished.

Karan said, “It all started with me and the four women on our way to a funeral. We were on a flight, and they were literally discussing whey they are wearing which kind of salwar kameez! Maheep was too blingy and she was trying to justify, the other was too sober. I was like, ‘Someone has passed away, we are going to their funeral, and you are discussing your outfits?! Does anyone care!’ I thought I have to make a show with these four women.”

When the reality TV program debuted in 2020 and followed the four Bollywood wives in their personal and professional lives, it was quickly labeled as a "cringe binge." The show's producer, Karan Johar, stated that he is "proud of the kind of entertainment The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives offers."

Karan added, “When people say, ‘We were hating it but we couldn’t stop watching it,’ I am like job done! We have season three coming up and I know this is going to be the best season. I was watching it on my flight because they sent me the rushes and I was laughing so loudly! Everyone thought I was watching some comedy, but I couldn’t believe these women they are all so fantastic!”

The show's third season has expanded with the addition of two new "wives" from Delhi, as well as Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, the sister of Ranbir Kapoor and the daughter of Neetu Kapoor. The show veterans will be joined by philanthropist Shalini Passi, the wife of PASCO group chairman Sanjay Passi, and entrepreneur Kalyani Saha Chawla.
