MUMBAI: Darr, directed by Yash Chopra in 1993, marked a turning point in the careers of performers Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla. Many believe that the superstar overpowered the film's positive characters, despite the fact that he played the bad role of an obsessed lover. Everyone still remembers his famous line, "I love you, K-K-K-Kiran," but did you know that Yash Chopra was the source of it because of SRK's keen observational abilities?
Speaking recently on the fringes of an event hosted by the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Juhi Chawla disclosed that the director of the film served as the inspiration for the creation of that conversation. The actress claimed that Khan had informed her that Yash Chopra's speech difficulties were the source of K-K-K-Kiran.
She said, “Shah Rukh was observant. He said, ‘I am going to use it in the film’ and wahan se unhone woh shuru kiya and thank God for that!”
Not to add that Juhi and Shah Rukh Khan co-starred in multiple movies together, including Duplicate, Yes Boss, and Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, and that they were each other's 3 AM buddies.
Shah Rukh Khan disclosed during his appearance on Netflix's documentary series The Romantics that he collaborated extensively with Aditya Chopra on Darr to hone his nuances. The famous persona shared multiple insights into his persona, citing a former student who struggled with stammering as an example.
He remembered seeing in a BBC documentary that when doing study, it was said that one sound can trigger people's minds to race like a quick current. Aditya Chopra added that as the character is only now conscious of sound, he should know the name of the woman he loves the most. SRK approached Yashji with this notion. Kiran. Khan shared, “It was just for that one word because he’s so aware of her.”
In the same interaction, Shah Rukh Khan confessed that he had several “pseudo-intellectual conversations about characterization” with Aditya Chopra and brainstormed some ‘fantastically stupid ideas’ with him. The Happy New Year actor recalled once approaching Aditya with the idea of making a phone call hanging upside down.
Adi Chopra in his answer said ‘Yeah but… Dad won’t allow that.’ Shah Rukh Khan also recalled Jr Chopra telling him, ‘Listen I think dad is not going to take a close-up of this. But I think you did very well. So, you suggest it, if I do it, he’ll turn me down.’ SRK called himself and Aditya Chopra filters that helped each other with Yash Chopra.
During Darr's production, Shah Rukh Khan referred to Yash Chopra as the nation's best director in the same documentary series.
He further confessed, “Although they were very loving, I felt a little ill at ease in this big set-up. So, the person who I became friendly with, who I could chat with, was Adi.”
Regarding his career, Shah Rukh Khan is presently occupied with the preparations for his upcoming film, King, in which he will feature with his daughter Suhana Khan, who will portray his pupil..
