Kalki 2898 AD is getting all the hype but it’s not just because of the trailer but everything that came before that. The movie has finally been released and is getting a lot of love from the audience. The movie is a sci-fi mythological genre which is rare in Indian cinema and can be said Kalki 2898 AD might be the only movie in the genre. The story is heavily based on the Epic Mahabharata.

In an exclusive interview with Director Nag Ashwin over the humongous success of Kalki 2898 AD, the filmmaker opened up on the painstaking work behind the film's gobsmacking animation and VFX while also revealing plans for animated series and graphic novels in future based on the Kalki universe.
How much pre-visualization work was done before the shoot?
To this, Nag Ashwin said, “Not actually. A lot of pre...every stunt ways there’d be a lot of concept art, they’d be like books and books of concept art that we did and lot of storyboards for every sequence, so during the peak of production there were atleast 4 or 5 people in-house. Maybe big productions have more people but for us 4 or 5 people were just there non-stop everyday just doing either concepts or storyboards.”
How was your experience working with the DNEG team on the VFX?
To this, Nag Ashwin said, “They did the entire second half, the Shambhala and the climax, they were great.”
How much of your vision was finally translated and how much of it changed in the final translation?
To this, Nag Ashwin said, “It’s a bit of, like every movie goes through a process of evolution, like from script to screen so I think it’s very similar for this also.”
There’s a plan to create a Kalki Universe and they have already done this with animation as we saw with Bujji. Can we expect more animated character spin-offs like BB and graphics novels in the future?
To this, Nag Ashwin said, “I hope so, we hope so, that’s the idea.”
This was our conversation with the director of Kalki 2898 AD, Nag Ashwin.
