There is still a significant lack of progressive content: Kashish Duggal

MUMBAI: Kashish Duggal, who has been a part of shows like Vishkanya, Sufiana Pyaar Mera, and Lockdown Ki Love Story, to name a few, and is currently seen in Suhaagan, feels that though the content on TV has evolved, there is still so much that needs to be done. She said, “I believe that while TV has evolved over the years, there is still a significant lack of progressive content. As an actor, I have encountered regressive storylines in my career.”

“I handle them by choosing my roles carefully and advocating for more meaningful and progressive narratives. It's important to stay true to my principles and strive for roles that contribute positively to society,” she added.   She further shared that the industry has shown both resistance and willingness to change. “On one hand, traditional formats and successful formulas are often repeated because they are seen as safe bets,” she said, adding, “On the other hand, there are producers and writers who are making genuine efforts to introduce more progressive narratives. The success of web series and new platforms has shown that there is an audience for diverse and forward-thinking content.”

Kashish further shared that for the TV industry to move towards more progressive and inclusive content, there needs to be a shift in mindset at all levels—from producers and writers to directors and actors. “We need to take risks with new ideas and narratives, and support content that challenges stereotypes and reflects the diversity of our society. Additionally, audience feedback should be taken seriously to understand their evolving preferences and expectations,” she said.   She also shared that actors quitting the industry over content is a wake-up call for everyone. She said, “It highlights the dissatisfaction among actors regarding repetitive and regressive content. This move should prompt the industry to reflect and make drastic changes in storytelling.”   “It's a clear indication that audiences and actors alike are craving more diverse, meaningful, and progressive narratives on TV,” she added.   What role can actors play in advocating for better content? “Actors can play a crucial role in advocating for better content by being selective about the projects they choose and using their platform to speak out about the need for change. We can push for more meaningful roles and collaborate with writers and directors to bring unique and progressive stories to life. By setting an example and not settling for less, actors can influence the industry towards higher standards of content,” Kashish ended.
