Gnarly, Gripping and a Perfect Homage: Alien: Romulus early reviews hail the sequel to the iconic classic

Alien: Romulus

MUMBAI: Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus has ignited the internet with early reactions that paint a promising picture for the long-standing sci-fi horror franchise. After the first screening in Los Angeles, critics and fans alike are lauding the film for its return to the gritty, atmospheric horror that defined the original Alien. Early viewers are all praises over the film’s masterful blend of homage and innovation. Germain Lussier of Gizmodo describes it as a “bonkers roller coaster ride” through the franchise’s history, while Courtney Howard of Variety hails it as “gnarly, gripping & gorgeously bleak”, Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geeky goes so far as to say it “pays perfect homage to the original,” praising the extensive use of practical effects.

The film's creature design and sound design have also been met with rave reviews. Jazz Tangcay of Variety describes the practical effects as so good they induced nightmares, while Leo Rydel highlights the "incredible creature design."  The performances of Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson have also garnered praise, with many critics singling them out for their standout work. Director Fede Alvarez, who has previously helmed the successful horror film ‘Don’t Breathe’, seems to have injected new life into the Alien franchise. Ridley Scott, the original creator of the series, has expressed his enthusiasm for Alvarez’s work, calling him a “surge of energy” for the franchise. As the film's release date approaches, anticipation for Alien: Romulus is building. With early reactions suggesting a grand return for the franchise, fans of the series have plenty to be excited about.

“Alien: Romulus” takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. The film stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, Aileen Wu in pivotal roles. Directed by Fede Alvarez who co-wrote the film with Rodo Sayagues, the film is based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett. “Alien: Romulus” is produced by Ridley Scott and Walter Hill with Fede Alvarez, Elizabeth Cantillon, Brent O’Connor and Tom Moran serving as executive producers.

20th Century Studios India will release ‘Alien: Romulus’ on August 23, in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, only in cinemas.
