MUMBAI : While the Hindi cinema is majorly about musicals and we rarely get to watch a movie with no songs, not a lot of movies come to our mind when thinking of movies which are based on music. Some really good movies and series (that had music as the central point) that come to our mind are Rock On (1 and 2), Aashiqui 2, Rockstar, Taal, Bandish Bandits, Gully Boy, Amar Singh Chamkila, and Qala. Now joining the list is the latest offering for JioCinema titled ‘Khalbali Records’ which is going to take you on a journey behind the shiny world of music and fame.

‘Khalbali Records’ packs a wonderful star cast – Ram Kapoor, Vikas Arora, Saloni Batra, Skand Sanjeev Thakur, Saloni Khanna, Kumar Varun, Manisha Arora, Prabh Deep and EPR Iyer. It has an impactful list of cameos like Anu Malik, Amit Trivedi, Raja Kumari, Rekha Bharadwaj, Neeti Mohan, Nikhita Gandhi, and so many more.

The series focuses on the father-son rivalry. When Mauj (played by Prabh Deep), a rising star is killed, his best friend and manager Raghav (played by Skand Sanjeev Thakur), shaken by Mauj’s death, decides to fulfil his best friend’s dream by establishing Khalbali Records, a company to support the truly creative minds of music. However, it isn’t acceptable for Raghav’s father, Manavendra Rai Singh aka MRS (played by Ram Kapoor), the head of one the top most record label, Galaxy Records.

This triggers a rivalry between the son and the father which leads to an edge-of-the-seat showdown. With a lot of actors playing pivotal parts, the story shows all aspects of music industry and human emotions. With a story that intrigues all the music lovers, showing the inside of the music world, the director Devanshu Singh and writer Sameer Saral Sharma have done a great job.

With every episode, the story takes us deeper and deeper into the world of music and it’s a treat to watch Ram Kapoor and Skand Sanjeev Thakur going head to head while even Saloni Batra leaves no stone unturned.

The music tracks and the background score of the series are really engaging and shows how ‘trending’ and commercialisation of art affects the culture of music and how listeners are made to hear what they don’t really want to hear. On the other hand, the essence of music is also explored and discovered in a way that was not shown before.

In conclusion, the series contains really good performances, with a story that will attract music listeners the most. However, in order to showcase the present-day reality, the story has put a lot of weight on rap and hip-hop music, although it comes with a clean intention for why it is so.

Team Tellychakkar gives Khalbali Records 3.5/5.
