Durga Puja

MUMBAI : The victory of good over evil is symbolised by Durga Puja, which honours the Goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo monster Mahishasur. Hindu legend states that Mahishasura was threatening the skies, so the gods made Durga to vanquish him. After a nine-day, intense struggle, Durga, armed with celestial weapons and mounted on a lion, vanquished him.

The celebration also coincides with the Navratri festival, which is observed in other regions of India and honors the various manifestations of Goddess Durga over the course of nine days.

Various cultural performances, including dance, music, and drama, take place during the celebrations. Dhak (traditional drum) performances, devotional songs, and dance forms like Dhunuchi Naach (dancing with incense burners) add to the festive atmosphere.

Laal Paar saree (red-bordered saree) is one of the most iconic sarees worn during Durga Puja.

It is typically a white or off-white cotton saree with a red border, symbolizing purity and power. This combination reflects the essence of the festival, as white stands for peace and the red signifies strength, passion, and Durga’s energy.

Women usually drape it in the traditional Bengali style, which includes letting the pallu (end of the saree) fall over the shoulder, with one side of the pallu left free to be tucked in gracefully.
