Aanand L Rai on filmmaking and the success behind Colour Yellow Productions

1

MUMBAI : Aanand L Rai’s Colour Yellow Productions (CY) has emerged as a powerhouse in Indian cinema, redefining the industry’s dynamics and reaping remarkable profits along the way. With a vision to bring India’s heartland stories to the forefront, the production house has successfully balanced commercial success with meaningful storytelling. Under Rai’s leadership, CY has consistently delivered films that resonate with audiences while breaking box office records, cementing its status as a game-changer in the business of filmmaking.

The journey to profitability began with CY’s first major hit, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, which grossed over Rs 50 crore, a significant achievement for its time. The sequel, ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’, shattered expectations with over Rs 250 crore in worldwide earnings. Other films like ‘Raanjhanaa’ earned over Rs 85 crore globally and ‘Tumbbad’, which redefined horror and earned cult status, further established the brand’s ability to produce critically acclaimed and financially successful ventures. The recent re-release of ‘Tumbbad’ showcased Rai’s ability to sustain profitability through long-term audience engagement. The production house’s adaptability has driven profits, with its foray into OTT proving a masterstroke. Films like ‘Haseen Dillruba’ and its sequel, ‘Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba’, topped Netflix charts globally, entering the top 10 in 22 countries. This diversification into direct-to-digital releases has opened new revenue streams while balancing innovation with profitability. Beyond Bollywood, Colour Yellow has successfully ventured into regional cinema with Marathi hits like Aatmapamphlet and Jhimma 2. Their third Marathi film, Fussclass Dabhade, is now gearing up for its much-anticipated release, showcasing the universal appeal of India’s heartland stories.

With ventures spanning Bollywood, regional cinema, and OTT platforms, Colour Yellow Productions is poised to significantly expand its content slate. This exciting growth will not only ensure a steady and robust stream of projects but also cater to an even broader range of audience preferences, all while continuing to innovate and push boundaries in Indian filmmaking.

Speaking about the diverse approaches to filmmaking, Rai shared "There is no one way in filmmaking. At Colour Yellow, we focus on creating dynamic stories that resonate with audiences, whether through a Bollywood classic or a regional gem. Our goal has always been to connect emotionally with the viewer while exploring untold narratives. From cult classics like Tumbbad to the rich tapestry of Marathi cinema, we aim to reflect life’s essence in every story we tell.”

As profits soar, so do the stakes. Slated for a Valentine’s Day 2025 release, Colour Yellow's Nakhrewaalii marks the first of a three-project association with Jio Studios. Additionally, Rai will return to the director’s chair for Tere Ishk Mein, starring Dhanush. With a remarkable and consistent history of creating films that resonate deeply with audiences, Colour Yellow Productions has become a blueprint for success in Indian cinema—a testament to not only Aanand L Rai’s creative vision but also his sharp business acumen.
