Richa Chadha Unveils ‘Akhri Somvaar’ – A Heartfelt Dramedy About Love, Marriage, and Societal Pressures

Richa Chadha

MUMBAI: On Valentine’s Day, Richa Chadha introduced audiences to a brand-new love story—one she has not only written but will also star in. Titled Akhri Somvaar, this upcoming dramedy takes a humorous yet poignant look at the societal pressures surrounding marriage.

A Story Born in Lockdown

During the second lockdown, when the world seemed to be on pause, Chadha channelled her creative energy into writing. Already making her mark as a producer, she decided to take it a step further by penning a story close to her heart. The film follows the journey of a successful reality TV producer who finds herself desperate to get married after a colleague labels her a "childless cat lady."

Reflecting on the inspiration behind Akhri Somvaar, Chadha shares,

“Having grown up in a middle-class Punjabi household, I have witnessed the traditional set-up of arranged marriages firsthand. I remember watching older cousins being matched with potential suitors, and those experiences stayed with me. When we graduate from university, we are filled with dreams and ambitions. But as we step into the working world, those aspirations begin to fade. Suddenly, you’re in your mid-30s, trying to juggle a successful career and a personal life, yet society tells you it’s too late. You start to feel jaded, as if the dreams you once had are now out of reach.”

A Refreshing Take on Love and Family

Describing the film as a slice-of-life story, Chadha promises an emotional rollercoaster about falling apart and coming back together. She highlights the scarcity of wholesome family entertainment in today’s cinematic landscape and sees Akhri Somvaar as an opportunity to fill that gap.

“I also feel my comic timing has been greatly underutilised. And as a producer, I see it as a monetisable asset.”

While she remains tight-lipped about the director at the helm of this project, Chadha’s passion for the story is evident.

With its unique premise, Akhri Somvaar is set to be a heartwarming yet hilarious exploration of love, societal expectations, and the pursuit of the perfect wedding. Fans can expect a film that is both entertaining and deeply relatable—one that might just redefine the way we look at love and marriage in modern India.
