MUMBAI: Tom Cruise has finally taken home an Oscar, an Honorary Academy Award, marking a monumental moment in his iconic, decades-long career.

Despite four previous nominations across different categories, this is the first time the Hollywood superstar has received an Oscar of his own.

The award was presented to him at the Governors Awards on November 16, where filmmaker Alejandro G. Inarritu, who directs one of Cruise’s upcoming films, handed him the prestigious honour.

Standing before a room filled with filmmakers, artists, and industry greats, Cruise delivered a moving and heartfelt speech. He began by reflecting on what cinema has meant to him throughout his life.

“The cinema takes me around the world. It helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me, also, our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways,” he said.

He continued, “No matter where we come from, in that theatre, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, and that is the power of this art form.

And that is why it matters, that is why it matters to me. So making films is not what I do, it is who I am.”

Cruise, now 63, then traced his journey back to his earliest memories. He recalled the moment cinema first touched his life, a moment that would shape his destiny.

“My love for cinema began at a very early age, as early as I can remember. I was just a little kid in a darkened theatre, and I remember that beam of light just cut across the room,” he shared.

“I remember looking up, and it seemed to be just exploded on the screen. Suddenly, the world was so much larger than the one that I knew.”

He explained how movies opened up entire cultures and landscapes to him, igniting a spark that turned into passion.

“Experiencing films sparked a hunger for adventure, a hunger for knowledge, a hunger to understand humanity, to create characters, to tell a story, to see the world,” Cruise said. “It opened my eyes.

It opened my imagination to the possibility that life could expand far beyond the boundaries that I then perceived in my own life. And I have been following that beam of light ever since.”

Cruise also spoke about the people he has worked with across his career, directors, co-stars, writers, and crew members, and how deeply grateful he feels to have collaborated with so many creative minds.

He acknowledged that filmmaking is a collective art form, expressing immense appreciation for everyone who has contributed to his journey.

The night also honoured other distinguished figures in the industry. Choreographer Debbie Allen, legendary singer Dolly Parton, and esteemed production designer Wynn Thomas were also recipients of honorary awards for their contributions to entertainment and the arts.

Tom Cruise’s emotional speech and long-awaited recognition became one of the most talked-about moments of the evening, with fans and industry peers celebrating the milestone.

The award not only commemorates his past achievements but also celebrates the passion and dedication that continue to define his extraordinary career.
