If you don’t like remakes, don’t watch them, simple: Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra is a bit upset over the negative reaction that her latest remake Zanjeer has been garnering. Writers Salim and Javed, who had penned the 1973 original film, had earlier voiced their displeasure of not being consulted. “Right from day one, we had lots of unnecessary controversies which I don’t know much about. But we did get the support from the industry as well when the shoot began. I remember Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, who had played the lead in original, coming over to the sets to meet Ram Charan and wishing him good luck. As for Javed Saheb’s point of view, it is better that you ask the producer (Puneet Prakash Mehra) about the same,” she asks. Here it should be mentioned that Priyanka, who had earlier also acted in the new Don and Agneepath , does not like the word remake. “Although the general story is the same but my character has been changed, the film is shot in a different manner. I would rather call it to be the maker’s tribute to the older movie and its maker.” “Many youngsters might have not watched the original. So after watching our sequel, they might want to check that one out due to a curiosity factor. Like I myself had not seen the original Prakash Mehra-directed classic till I started shooting for my film,” she adds. When asked to comment on the use of the same lyrics (mukhda) in a song in the new film, the actress turned singer, gets a bit testy and informs, “We Indians are getting too judgmental. We claim to live in a democracy where we have freedom of speech yet we speak in the manner that is being spoken today. Films are for entertainment, different filmmakers make films for different reasons. We had several examples of older lyrics like Tayab Ali Jaan Ki Dushman (Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara ) which were re-used for we liked it.” “Some work, while some others don’t. This creative call to do one’s own thing must not be compromised. Having said that, I also support the other’s right to express his/her opinion that he/she doesn’t like the newer version and prefers the older one; if you don’t like it, don’t watch it, simple. But I would not go so far as some others and call it a case of creative bankruptcy. It just a tribute as I mentioned earlier.” Hmm…someone sounds agitated. PeeCee just chill!!!
