Producer Deeya Singh wants her children to be like Farhan and Zoya

Producer Deeya Singh (DJ’s A Creative Unit) is known for her unique concepts whether it be Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, Bhaskar Bharti, or the latest offering, Ek Mutthi Aasman. However, not many know about the caring and doting mother in Deeya who wants her children to grow up as multi-talented individuals. Deeya and Tony’s daughter Giaa gave her arangetram in Odissi dance form yesterday (5 October 2013) and Deeya is elated about the fact as she told us, “I have learnt Bharatanatyam but the thing is that I gave up on it after learning it for 6 to 7 years. I did not give my arangetram as I did not realize its value. Giaa did not give up as she has reached this far and that is why this moment is even more life-defining for me. She was hardly 12 or 13 when she had gone to Turkey to perform. There were students from 50 countries and she was one of them. She stayed there with a Turkish family, spent 15 days without even understanding their language or them understanding English. The only mode of communication for them was her dance. She even met the president there and he felicitated her.” Interestingly, Giaa in addition to dancing, nurtures other passions, as her producer mother explained, “She has learnt classical singing for 6 to 7 years and has also been acting. In fact recently she performed in a play called Macbeth. Basically her school Singapore International has encouraged her to do everything. Plus this is a smart move from me so that my teenager does not do too many teen-a-gerish things.” She went on to add, “I thought why not ask her to do that one particular thing that becomes important to her as this might keep her away from spending extra times at coffee shops and parties. Luckily everything just fell into place. In fact few years back, she hated everything that she did, but recently, he said ‘thanks mom’. I also keep forcing my son to play tabla.” So what are his skills? “Jashn is learning tabla at the moment; he also plays guitar and football.” Do you want them to become actors? “You can never have a plan. The lord above always has a plan. The cosmos take you where it has to. We have had a hard year as my mom was in the hospital. She is recovering from cancer. Plus, we launched a new show in Ek Mutthi Aasman and then Giaa’s arangetram came in the picture. She is going to Brazil on Tuesday (8 October 2013) to perform. So, you can’t really plan things.” She further went on to add, “I watch Farhan Akhtar very closely and I feel this is the day and time for multitasking. The more things you know the better it is. The more talent you have the more you must nurture it. My daughter can sing, dance, act and direct and it’s good for her.” She can also direct? “She is learning film making. Her high level subject is film making.” We couldn’t help but tell the Producer that she has two bundles of talent at her home and she went on to giggle as she said, “I feel this is the day for multi-tasking; hence I always tell Giaa and Jashn that some day they can jam together like Farhan and Zoya.” Lastly, we asked her how her new baby Ek Mutthi Aasman is doing and she promptly replied, “Slow and steady wins the race. We are the little tortoise climbing upwards. I always feel that one has to be patient when you’re trying to do something new. Over here we are not looking at 2+2=4 but we are trying to get 1+3=4.” Three cheers to the talented Producer and the proud mother!!
