TellyChakkar, in conversation with Swapnil Joshi, the comic star, best known for his impeccable timing. We asked 1o funny questions to the star of SAB’s Papad Pol. Given your best in the field of comedy…Which comedy show is your personal favourite? I had my best memories with the leading comedy show, Comedy Circus, as I was a part of it for quite a long time. So the concept of this show still stands out as an epic and is my personal favourite (smiles). Tell us one of your favourite comic line or punch line… One favorite punch line which I often like to use is ‘agar ghee seedhi oongli se na nikle toh chammach use karni chahiye’ and when someone tells me that his or her son scored 94 per cent in exams, I tend to say a line, don’t know whether it sounds funny or not but I say this, ‘arre kya yaar itne mein to do bachche pass ho jate’. Your favourite comic actor and why? Ali Asgar is my all-time favourite. He has a brilliant comic-timing which is part of a good comic actor. Besides this, despite being an established actor he still remains to be a very down-to-earth person. And I think that it’s not at all easy as it seems to be, as I too have tried to be one like him and it’s seriously not an easy job. Can you share one of your funniest anecdotes? On the sets of Papad Pol, we have our associate cameraman, named Awaiz pronounced as O-as. We dearly call him OS which means ‘over the shoulder’ (laughs). And just to irritate him, we continuously call out his name many times. One funny thing you wish you could do... Nothing at all! I think I am a huge prankster and have almost done everything I can. But one thing which I take care of while playing any prank is I always try to play reasonable pranks. I don’t play pranks which would affect or harm anyone, as I want people to only enjoy it to the fullest. One funniest incident while shooting which enjoys you the most… It always happens whenever someone wants to leave early from the shoot, he/she tries to wrap up his part of scene as early as possible. But we always plan a group-effort to irritate the actor by doing it late, some or the other way. Even our scheduler gets involved with us in the prank then. We delay it saying that the co-actor isn’t comfortable with a particular shot and is taking time or also at times postpone that scene to the next day. Say if a person wants to leave at 4 pm we irritate him till 3.30… One funny dance number you would like to perform on. I would like to dance on Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan’s song ‘Tere pyaar ka ras zara chakhna o makhnaa...’ from the film, Chote Miya Bade Miya. As I think the two have performed amazingly well in the song. How would you propose a girl in a funny way? First of all, let me tell you a fact that I really never have to be funny in such situations. Thanks to Comedy Circus, I have acquired a funny image that even if I am serious, people take it funnily. Still if I had to propose a girl in a funny way, I would call her with her best-friend (female), and then propose to her friend instead of her. Then probably when she would walk out from there getting annoyed, I would then tell her friend that I was pulling her leg and that the proposal was for her and not for her friend! Comedy is serious business. How serious are you about comedy? I am dead serious about comedy. I never take it lightly as it is a tough job. It’s an old belief which has always turned out to be true that, there’s always a hidden tragedy behind every smiling face… And that almost every comic-actor has something ‘sad’ hidden. Do you mask something behind your smiling face? I completely agree with this. I think a smiling face and the ability to create humor out of your tragedy masked by a smile is a great gift by God to us. And it’s obvious that if someone who wishes to hide a tragedy of life through humor would not want people to know the sad part of his life. So I too am not comfortable sharing the sad part of my life and it’s better kept hidden with a smiling face.
