There is something magnetic about Kangana Ranaut that makes one fall immediately in love with her. And when she talks, you instantly realise that you are hearing words that are unadulterated and straight from her heart – a rarity in Bollywood. Tellychakkar.com met the pretty actress on New Year’s Eve for a heartfelt chat on movies, men and marriage.
Queen looks like a women-centric subject. What is it all about?
It’s the story of this very simple girl called Rani who has had a sheltered upbringing. She is not confident or smart about herself and is often teased as behenji. Then due to certain circumstances she ends up going alone on her honeymoon which transforms her life altogether. I would say it’s a travel movie.
So the simple girl will ultimately become a siren as is seen in movies?
No No! It’s not that the salwar kameez donning girl will change into a skirt wearing beauty. That’s not the transformation we are intending at. The movie will show the transformation of the underdog. Queen is different from our usual Bollywood fare.
How similar or different in real life are you from Rani?
Personality wise, me and Rani are completely different because I have never faced any confidence issues and never had any self doubts about myself. Similarities lie in the family of Rani and mine. Even I used to live in a joint family and just like Rani the familial attitude towards girls in my home town is sheltered and conservative.
You walked away with top honours for your performance in Krrish 3 but Rajjo’s flop show created a dent. Would you say it was a mistake to do Rajjo in hindsight?
In movies like Krrish you go to the sets, do your work and come back. You have no idea how the movie is shaping up. Even we get to see it only a few days before the actual release. As an actor whatever is given to me be it dialogues, song or dance, I try to do it to the best of my abilities. And I am not one of those people who will blame and curse the moviemakers if a particular movie doesn’t work. Sometimes you have great expectations about a movie and it doesn’t work. Talking about Rajjo, I didn’t have big expectations from it. Yes, it didn’t work but it was a learning experience for me.
Two of the biggest hits of your career – Fashion and now Krrish3- had Priyanka Chopra in it. Would you say she is your lucky mascot?
(Smiles) Yes, you could say that she is my lucky mascot.
Are you happy teaming up with senior actresses or would you like to do more solo heroine projects?
(Thinks) Well, see I would like to do more solo heroine movies rather than being in multi-starrers. I think as a solo heroine, you have far more creative control in terms of how you can take the scene along and how well you can perform. I like that control. I think I can creatively contribute more if I am a solo heroine.
We haven’t seen you team up with any of the Khans till now? Among the three Khans who would you like to work with, if given a chance?
There are a lot of talented and experienced people I would like to work with. But to answer your question, I would like to work with Mr. Aamir Khan.
