This is a perfect catch 22 situation for Bollywood denizens. On one hand, you have the country’s general elections, while on the other there is India’s Oscars IIFA, both scheduled to unfold at the same time. While Mumbai will go to polls on 24 April, IIFA will be a four-day affair in Florida, USA starting from 23 April (2014).
Now with almost all big names of the industry confirmed to make an appearance at IIFA, it looks like many of the stars who form a part of Mumbai’s electorate could end up skipping elections this time. While the actual award ceremony will happen on Saturday, the fact that it takes about 16 hours to reach USA from India could mean that stars will take off much well in advance. And for those performing at IIFA this time it is a given that they will be in USA, right from the very beginning for their rehearsals.
The big names confirmed to perform this time include Hrithik Roshan, Sonakshi Sinha, Bipasha Basu, Farhan Akhtar and Shahid Kapoor both of whom are hosting, Saif Ali Khan and Vir Das (again hosts), Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. Besides them, there are others who have been nominated in various categories. Deepika Padukone for instance, has three Best Actress nominations to her credit. Other nominees include Ranbir Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur, Anupam Kher, Kalki Koechlin and directors Rakesh Roshan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rohit Shetty. Actress Vidya Balan too, will be seen participating in a session along with Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey.
With IIFA being billed to be an extravagant affair and much bigger in fanfare this time, it is only logical to conclude that not many would want to miss it. Or will any Bollywood stars make the supreme sacrifice of staying back in Mumbai to cast their precious vote? Come 24 April and one will know.
