Movie Review: Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi

Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi
Starring: Siddharth Gupta, Simran Kaur Mundi and Ashish Juneja Directed by: Aman Sachdeva Rating: * * * Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt once rightly noted, “The producer of Ragini MMS 2 should be credited for the movie’s success rather than Sunny Leone.” What he implicitly meant was that Ekta Kapoor should be lauded for turning around Sunny’s career after twin colossal failures. Kuku Mathur ki Jhand Ho Gayi proves Vikram right, yet again. Ekta has once again delivered a superlative product streamlining newcomers. There is nothing cheap about the movie which has been labeled as the cheapest movie made by Balaji so far. The story may not really be unique but it is the treatment that makes it a worthy watch. The story revolves around Kuku Mathur (Siddharth Gupta), an underdog whose financially poor condition and lack of self confidence makes him the perfect jhand victim in life. A motherless son, Kuku has to work hard to support his family comprising of his father and young school going sister. The one thing that Kuku is extremely good at is cooking. His lone support is his langoti yaar Ronnie (Ashish Juneja - brilliant) who is rich and doesn’t mind splurging on his best pal, Kuku. Kuku, on his part, tries to eke out a living by serving tea on film sets, ironing clothes, cleaning the Scooty of an emerging starlet (Pallavi Batra) and at times doubling up as the non-descript thermocol holding assistant and the starlet’s boyfriend. In this drab like existence, a girl called Mithali (Simran Kaur Mundi – wasted in a meaningless role) forms his dream fantasy. Kuku has been ‘seeing’ her for the past seven years with his eyes but has never had the courage to ask her out. The innocent Kuku is soon kicked out of his cocooned world by the rich ruthless ruffians of Ronnie’s family. Lost and dejected he finds solace in the arms of his uncle Prabhakar (Amit Sial-outstandingly brilliant) who literally fires the gun off his innocent nephew’s shoulder for his own benefit. Things change in a jiffy for Kuku and by adopting unfair means both Kuku and Prabhakar grow rich and Kuku realizes his dream of opening a restaurant. But then truth soon catches up and Kuku’s conscience troubles him for having taken the devil path in his endeavour to exact revenge and grow rich. Will Kuku seek forgiveness of those who he has wronged or will he prefer to build his business by stepping on others toes….Well, that’s what the movie seeks to explore in its entirety. Kuku Mathur…stands out for its strong punch lines that leave audience in splits on most occasions. The casting department needs a special mention here for having chosen brilliant actors to play the supporting characters. Everyone from the security guard to his wife, the emerging starlet and her leading man to finally Prabhakar played by Amit Sial keep the audience engaged with their captivating performances. But the man who walks with top honours is undoubtedly Siddharth Gupta who makes an impressive debut. Siddharth portrays the gullibility of a financially weak underdog with great conviction. The innocence pouring out of his eyes makes one empathise with the youngster who more often than not finds himself in jhand like situations for no fault of his. For someone who doesn’t really identify with his reel life character, the transformation of Siddharth Gupta into a soft spoken, susceptible and naive Kuku deserves a rapturous applause. The film keeps you engaged throughout its first half but loses a bit of its steam in the second. Nevertheless, with a running time of about 109 minutes you are hardly subjected to moments of boredom save for the one particular scene where Kuku interacts on a one-on-one level with a fraud seer who lectures him on enlightenment pronounced as ‘enlightment’. The romance between Siddharth and Simran too was weakly plotted. An elaborate wooing sequence in the second half would have been a real mood lifter. Nonetheless, Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi gives you more than one reason to cheer and could be a perfect way to end your summer holidays with a smile on your face.
