I don't want to become a national embarrassment after performing on stage - Karan 'Jhalak' Johar

Karan Johar
He may have started his career with a minuscule role in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, but the expert filmmaker of family drama, Karan Johar has come a long way with dozens of blockbusters under his belt. One of the top producer-director in the country today, Karan is back as the judge in the latest season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (BBC Worldwide Media) on Colors. At the launch of the show, he let us into the detailing of what viewers can expect from him this season. Karan who has always been the ‘fun’ judge on the sets showing off his moves quite often, has taken a pledge this season to not give a chance to the viewers to see his dance skills. Briefing more on that, he said, “It will surely be a difficult time for me to not shake a leg on the stage; I almost feel like a patient back from rehab craving for drugs. But the point of concern is that after seeing my dance, viewers don’t take me or my movies seriously. They feel if he dances this way, his films would also be of the same kind. So I don’t want to become a national embarrassment seeing myself perform on stage.” Talking further about how he has been left out from a makeover unlike the other two judges, Karan in his usual sarcastic tone averred, “The makers and channel are giving me a step brother treatment and I feel awful about the fact. It seems all the suits of last year have been repeated for me. They are actually cutting cost of the season through me. But yes after the Reliance collateral coming in, I hope they get me some new clothes from Reliance Mart (laughs).” Talking about judging a dance reality show, the talented man quipped, “Indians have dance in their DNA and we just can’t help moving whenever music is played near us. But with the competition growing fiercer, I think it was high time we upped the game. So yes there will be an element of rigidness and strictness from our side in terms of scores so that the quality of performances do not deter. Also we have introduced a ‘jhooter’ device which will beep when there is an over dosage of flattery and will stop people with a ‘Oh Please’ alert (winks).” And finally when asked about how brilliant performers sometimes have to be shown the door, Karan cleared the matter. “That is basically the format of the show where public voting equals the score in terms of final results. We have witnessed journeys of non dancers emerging as brilliant performers with their strength and hard work; this aspect astonishes us the most and I think that’s the case with viewers too.” Karan, do a good job as usual!!
