In 2000, Gayatri won the title of Femina Miss India International. She then decided to try her hand in acting and started working in commercials.

Amrita made her Bollywood debut with 2002 film Ab Ke Baras. Sooraj Barjatya's Vivah, also starring Shahid Kapoor, remains her most popular film.
