Road accidents have become so common these days that news reports about it hardly yanks our curious eyebrows. But the facts and new details revealed on Satyamev Jayate (SMJ) on Star Plus yesterday clearly makes one ask the question - Are road accidents cold blooded murders? We list five things we liked about episode 2.
1. SMJ employed a tried and tested tool potent enough to grip you - a tragic story that would make you sit up and listen in rapt attention. When Shailesh Shetye narrated the events that led to the tragic death of his pregnant wife in a road accident, it is not just sympathy that you felt for the victim but also a deeper sense of responsibility that you should shoulder while driving your vehicle on public roads. No other story could have probably emphasised the dictum 'Speed thrills but kills'.
2. SMJ aptly highlighted how most accidents involving school buses are not freak incidents but a well-planned murder that was asking to be unleashed. Episode 2 rightly highlighted how school buses put kids at a risk by overloading their small tempos with double its passenger capacity, in this case kids.
3. Ever wondered who is to be held responsible for accidents involving heavy duty trucks? It's the ruthless owners who load the trucks with more than 50 tonne goods putting additional pressure on tyres thereby deflating it and causing accidents on highways, a fact hitherto highlighted. Another nauseating fact about how truck drivers are high on drugs which are easily available and sold by drug peddlers on highways.
4. Complete apathy of government officials while issuing licenses. Anyone who can start and move the car is issued a driving license.
5. The right mix of participants on the show all of whose stories emphasised that accidents can be easily avoided in most cases by taking the right precautions.
