When I sang for Sonu Nigam

A page from the personal diary of Sana Shiekh In 2004, when I was a student of National College, Bandra, I was selected amongst many who had applied for an RJ's post. They asked me who I wanted to interview first. It was my first radio interview, and very special, so I said, "Sonu Nigam". Since childhood I had been a big fan of his and used to see him in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, so no one else came to my mind. At that time, Sonu was judging Indian Idol 1. And finally, I was at his home with a mike and a recorder. I was trembling and Sonu noticed it. He asked me if I was feeling cold and wanted the air conditioner off. I said yes but even after the AC was off I could not stop shivering. He realized I was nervous and assured me he was just another human being like me and there was no reason to worry. Soon I became comfortable and asked him as many questions as I could. Sonu was surprised to know I knew so much about him. It was the first time someone asked him such questions regarding his personal and professional lives. I told him I was a big fan of his and had kept many of his pictures in my books and wardrobe. Sonu was very impressed and I also sang for him. Very few people know I am a good singer and Sonu appreciated my singing. Since then I have interviewed him many times. But the first one remains the special in my heart. Since then, Sonu makes a point to call me once in a while and he never forgets to wish me on my special days. He and his family always visit my house on Eid and we all have biriyani together.
