In an interaction with a media portal, Zoya Akhtar talked about living up to the audience’s imagination, managing an ensemble cast and much more.

Did you feel at any point it was difficult to live up to the audience’s imagination?

Because it came to us, and I am directing the film, I have to put in what Archie meant to me and every time I opened up that comic book, when I was 10 years old or 12 years old, I was transported to this fictional magical place called Riverdale where everything just worked, everything was pretty and everyone was fun. I wanted that ‘idealic’ feeling that is what it meant to me. What it meant to me, I wanted to take that and put that out.

You had mentioned earlier that less is more. With more than one brain working, does it become difficult to maintain the less is more? Does it get imbalanced?

No, I think both us (Including Reema Kagti) and Ayesha DeVitre, who has written the script with us, were all on the same page. It was a simpler time, it was an innocent time, it was a slower time. Less is more, things are hectic today but then the people seemed to be happier. So I think we were all aligned on that.

How do you manage an ensemble cast, the backstory, and the context?

We really layer our writing. Actually we have love for our characters. We have love for the genres, and for the ensemble stories. Like Reema said that sometimes there are multiple themes and you need more than one person to cover that gamete.
