Gangs of Wasseypur (2012)

This two-part Indian crime film directed by Anurag Kashyap, is centered on the coal mafia of Dhanbad where a clash between Sultan and Shahid Khan leads to the expulsion of Khan from Wasseypur, and ignites a deadly blood feud spanning three generations. The story is spread across the time period 1941 to 2009. While both parts of the film were originally shot as a single 5hr 35minute film, they had to be released in two parts as most Indian theatres were unwilling to screen a film of this length. Stream Gangs of Wasseypur on Amazon Prime Video.

Black Friday (2004)

Written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, this crime film is based on a book by Hussain Zaidi entitled, Black Friday: The True Story of the Bombay Bomb Blasts. The film documents investigations following the 1993 Bombay serial bomb blasts, and is told through the lens of different people involved – the Mumbai police, conspirators, victims and middlemen. This critically acclaimed film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles. Watch Black Friday on Amazon Prime Video.

Ugly (2013)

This dark thriller – written, co-produced and directed by Anurag Kashyap – was shot without giving any of the lead actors a script, as Kashyap felt the film ‘required’ that. The narrative follows the case of a missing girl and takes the audience on a journey of human greed, while brushing upon the egos and repressed emotions of the characters. Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016)
