MUMBAI: Actors who make a big impression in the field are likely to be offered roles comparable to theirs. Actor Divyenndu has dealt with this reality twice in his career, in Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Mirzapur, and he says it's never easy to be in.

Divyenndu made his screen debut as Liquid in Luv Ranjan's buddy comedy Pyaar Ka Punchnama in 2011. After a span of seven years, he was cast in the much-anticipated role of Munna Bhaiya in the Amazon Prime Video series Mirzapur.

The actor claimed that the “lures” to follow a pattern after a success were “always there” in a recent interview. “Even after my first film Pyaar ka Punchnama, people were like, ‘Please keep doing comedies!’ But I didn’t want to do stuff that isn’t resonating with me.”

Divyenndu equates constructing an image to digging a new well, and he claims that his constant internal conflict is whether or not it is wise to dig a new well each time. “I’d have this conversation with myself, that it is me who dug this well, so I might as well draw water from it. It is stupid to then say, I have dug this well so now I will move on.”

Although Divyendu claims he has no "materialistic bone" in his body and that his film selections are not influenced by commerce, he occasionally accepts projects that may not always be high on a unique character but sometimes come with a fat paycheck.

He said, “But yes it is true, once you do a (memorable) character and similar offers come to you, it is stupid also to not do it. It is a photocopy of your original at the end of the day. It is a dichotomy, you feel like punching yourself and saying, ‘Kar lena yaar, why are you thinking so much about it.’ I mean, who is looking at you and saying, ‘There is this one actor who is not repeating himself.’ Something does stop you. So I don’t know if it is a curse or a boon.”

Recently, Divyendu made his OTT debut in the four-part Netflix series The Railway Men, produced by Yash Raj Films. Post-production is presently underway for the third season of Mirzapur 3, which stars Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, and Isha Talwar among others.
