MUMBAI: Sonali Kulkarni has been in the Indian film industry for more than two decades. The actress has been a part of blockbuster movies like Dil Chahta Hai, Singham, Bharat, and more. Sonali is currently busy garnering praise for her performance in the web series Dharavi Bank in which she plays the role of Maharashtra’s Chief Minister.
TellyChakkar recently interacted with Sonali and spoke to her about the response she is getting for her performance in the web series, her experience of working with Suniel Shetty and Vivek Oberoi, and more…
What response have you been getting for your performance in Dharavi Bank?
Wherever I am going people are making way for me saying that the CM is here. It’s fabulous! From my own campus to the store I went to, and on my shoots, everyone is saying ‘make way CM is here’ which is fun.
Were you a bit surprised when you were offered Dharavi Bank as you would be seen as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, and the state has never had a female CM?
Definitely! I have been watching Samit’s journey for a while now and I like the kind of storytelling he has. When he came to me with Dharavi Bank, he told me that there’s a character who is a CM. So, I couldn’t believe that Maharashtra is going to have a female Chief Minister. That was a pleasant surprise, but I think the way Indian politics is developing, we are going beyond genders, which is a welcome change. My character Janhvi Surve is aggressive and dominating, and in her mind, she is the Chief Minister and CM for her, does not have any gender, male or female; it is just power. I was surprised and I questioned myself if I would be able to take the challenge, but thanks to my writers, director, and co-stars I could pull it off.
How was your experience of working with Suniel Shetty and Vivek Oberoi?
I do not have a single scene on screen with Suniel sir, we just talk on the phone. But, I can always say that it’s a pleasure working with Suniel sir. As a person, he is extremely warm and caring; you feel like you are having a real Anna on the team. With Vivek, it was one of those dream come true moments for me because I have loved him in the variety of roles he has done. He has been a romantic as well as an action hero. When you are getting seasoned in the industry, you allow people to have their tantrums. I don’t expect much from other stars, and to my surprise, Vivek was absolutely committed and passionate.
