MUMBAI :A short film titled The Broken Table starring Naseeruddin Shah and Rasika Dugal recently premiered on YouTube. The short film is directed by Chintan Sarda who had earlier helmed a short film titled Shunyata starring Jackie Shroff.

What response are you getting for your short film The Broken Table?

The response has been phenomenal. It has just been a day but I got so many phone calls and messages from people telling me how they got emotional while watching the film. Some of them connected it to their own life stories and their parents. I honestly did not expect such an overwhelming response. I can’t wait for more people to see the film. Just reading the YouTube comments on the film page makes my day. It is great to see people’s interpretation of the film and how they relate it to their personal lives.

How was it to work with Naseeruddin Shah and Rasika Duggal, especially Naseer sir as he is such a veteran actor?

It was great working with both of these incredible actors. Naseer saab is a legend and I have grown up watching his films. His work inspired me to quit my investment banking job in London and get into filmmaking so it was an honor to direct him. Rasika is also so great at what she does. The subtlety and nuance that she brings to every scene are admirable. It was honestly difficult to give them both feedback after each take as there was barely ever a false note in their performance. They both had so deeply internalized the character that we had created that sometimes they would surprise us by taking a direction that even my co-writer Vikram Gupta and I had never imagined. They made the characters their own. It was truly an honor and a very enriching experience to work with both Naseer saab and Rasika.

You have also made a short film earlier, so when do you plan to make your directorial debut with a full-fledged movie?

Well, I plan to make a feature film as soon as I find a producer, who is as excited about my stories and characters as I am. I had signed 2 feature films but they were both first-time producers and couldn’t finish the film. One of them developed cold feet because his friend told him that producing a film is a risky business. He pulled the plug just when we were meant to sign the contracts after locking everything including a well-known lead actor. Another project stalled because there was an income tax raid at this producer’s house just before the shoot. We never started the shooting schedule after that. I wasted a lot of time on these projects and realized that it is really important to work with the right people even if it takes time. So, hoping to find collaborators, while I keep developing stories that excite me.
