MUMBAI: From making a gripping series on the dreaded Pablo Escobar and the machinations of the notorious drug cartels of Central America, the makers of hit Netflix show Narcos are now moving into classic territory. French production company, Gaumont, producer of Narcos, is planning an adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s classic novel, The Phantom of the Opera, under the aegis of its UK arm.

The novel, which is also the basis of the iconic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, and several Hollywood movies, all by the same name, will be adapted into a six-episode miniseries. As per reports in the media, Gaumont’s TV adaptation of The Phantom Of The Opera is being written by writer Anthony Horowitz. There is no information on the rest of the crew, the cast or the platform where Gaumont’s adaptation will stream.
The Phantom Of The Opera, written in 1909, is a tale of the passionate love of a disfigured phantom like being, who lives in a secret lair at the bottom of the Paris Opera House. The disfigured man, called Erik, falls in love with Christine Daae, an opera singer who performs at the Paris Opera House. Though his love is one-sided, he affects Christine enough to make theirs a moving relationship.
The Phantom Of The Opera has received love and success in each of its numerous adaptations. It is one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most successful musicals ever. The film versions have been successful too. The 2004 film adaptation of The Phantom Of The Opera received three Oscar nominations.
Let’s see how successful its TV adaptation will be. And whether it will recreate the wild success of Narcos for its creators.
