MUMBAI : The days of OTT and television taking a backseat to movies are long gone. The expenses for both the productions as an entire and the performers in web series have gone up in recent years. In terms of production expenses, some of the most costly web series available now even exceed high-budget motion pictures. The lead actor in the most costly Indian online series ever produced received a record-breaking salary, outpacing popular shows like Animal and Dunki.
The most costly Indian show on OTT is Rudra: The Edge of Darkness, a Hindi-language Disney+ Hotstar remake of the British series Luther. With a stated budget of Rs 200 crore, the series has a much bigger budget than anything else available on Indian streaming services. Ajay Devgn, the show's major star, reportedly paid Rs 125 crore for it, with the balance of the price going toward production and marketing expenses as well as the cast members' pay, according to a popular news portal reports.
It's interesting to note that this puts Rudra's budget above that of certain recent high-profile Indian movies, such Animal (Rs 100 crore) and Dunki (Rs 85 crore). Rudra had a bigger budget than even Aamir Khan's ambitious Laal Singh Chaddha, which came in at Rs 180 crore. Other recent Indian films that have been released with budgets lower than Rudra season 1 are Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (Rs 132 crore), Gadar 2 (Rs 60 crore), and Sam Bahadur (Rs 50 crore).
Idris Elba plays a London police detective in the British criminal thriller Luther, which has a Hindi translation called Rudra. The part in Rudra is portrayed by Ajay Devgn. Along with Raashii Khanna, Esha Deol, Atul Kulkarni, and Ashish Vidyarthi, the show is directed by Rajesh Mapuskar. In March 2022, the first season debuted on Hotstar.
