MUMBAI: Across the world, beach destinations are very popular. But not many know about beaches that are lit up at night. Phytoplankton, a form of microalgae that floats at the surface of ocean water, is responsible for this mesmerising natural phenomenon. When disturbed by swimming water species or wave motion, the water releases a dazzling blueish lustre that can glow at any time, but only becomes apparent in dim light. There are many accessible locations where one may observe this natural occurrence. Here are five spots that are known for this mind-blowing phenomenon.

1. Toyama Bay, Japan

Squids can be found in incredible quantity at Toyama Bay in the central Japan Sea. The unique organs of the squid, called photophores, present at the tips of their tentacles, shine like glow sticks when agitated. A V-shaped canyon in Toyama Bay forces the millions of squid to the surface, where they are pushed up and turn the harbor into a glistening blue swirl. The firefly squids often spend the day in the deep ocean, floating to the surface at night to find food.

2. Luminous Lagoon, Jamaica

Take a nighttime cruise on the renowned Luminous Lagoon for an unforgettable experience. The glowing lagoon is said to be the largest and brightest of the places in the world where this rare sight occurs. It is home to millions of microorganisms that emit a flash of light when touched. Several tour boats full of visitors take guests on a journey around the lagoon every evening. The most exciting part of the ride is when you can jump off and swim as the green glimmer surrounds your entire body. The more you move, the more the water glows, leaving behind a sparkling streak.

3. Vaadhoo Island, Maldives

The beach here is famous for incredible fluorescent, luminous waves. The phenomenon causes the waves to glow as they softly splash over the beach. While here, you can also sign up for scuba diving and snorkeling and explore the abundant marine life in the ocean.

4. Mosquito Bay, Puerto Rico

Mosquito Bay lies on the southern tip of the island of Vieques, home to one of the world’s brightest bioluminescence phenomenon. The 2006 Guinness Book of Records also mentions this remarkable feature. You can schedule a kayak trip around the bay – either the traditional ones or the clear-bottom kayaks. Visit this location around a new moon with little to no moonlight, when the sky is exceptionally dark so you can see the magnificent glow more clearly.

5. Ton Sai, Thailand

Witness the bioluminescent plankton as it illuminates the water and catch a ferry as the sparkling night water forms a blue daze around you. One can even swim and snorkel during the day here to get those beachy vibes and engage in some water sports activities at this beach.
