MUMBAI: From makeup to skincare, 2023 has a lot of hot new beauty trends in store. Here are our predictions about which of these things will become popular in this new year.
1. Cold weather blush
The trend of applying blush on the nose is already pretty popular, but this past summer, it was more about doing so in a way that gives one a sunkissed, post-vacation look. Cold weather blush involves using matte formulas to recreate that flushed skin look you get during winters.
So, the blush colours used for this look are more blue-toned, and have less of that orange-y warmth that sunkissed nose blush gives. An extension of the Japanese E-girl trend, this is all about placing blush high on the apples, the bridge of the nose, and then blending it for a naturally rosy look across the centre of the face.

2. High-shine wet glow
Dewy skin isn’t going anywhere, and is getting even more glassy-looking. This season is going to be all about that wet-looking skin look with highlighters that resemble molten metal. The idea is to add shine to the parts of the face which would be illuminated by flashing camera lights, but in a way that makes it seem like the skin itself is pumped with dewy sheen, not ashy shimmers sitting on top of the skin.
This means under-eye highlighting will get quite popular, as will inner corner and nose highlights. Earlier, it was all about highlighting the high points of the face, but this might no longer be the trend.
3. Shiny lip lacquers
A lot of brands launched vinyl lip paints and lacquers in the past year, and that trend hasn’t fully permeated the Indian beauty scene yet. We suspect it will finally come to India in a big way this year, giving us long-wearing liquid lipsticks which are high shine and bold.
4. Lightweight makeup
Thick and heavy foundations are fast being cast aside for sheer and lightweight skin tints. As the inclusive beauty movement normalises skin texture, many consumers are moving away from full-coverage formulas in order to embrace their skin. So, the minimal coverage and dewy finish of serum-like BB creams and foundations is what most are opting for, leaving the cakiness behind.
5. Skincare benefits
In 2020, skincare really became paramount in people’s beauty routine, causing many to invest more in it than in makeup. As a result, we have already seen quite a few brands launch serum foundations in the past year, and that trend is only going to grow in 2023. Blushes which are nourishing, mascaras which are good for the lashes, and skin-enhancing foundations with skincare benefits will all take over the market.
6. Foiled and wet-looking eye makeup
In keeping with the shiny and wet-looking makeup trend, we will also see the rise of foiled eyeshadows. Soft and velvety shimmers will take a backseat, and sparkly shadows with a linear sheen that is highly reflective will be the eye makeup style of choice. Whether it’s a wash of balmy highlighter across the lids or a foiled shimmer shadow, this will be the year of shiny eyelids.
7. Body serums, SPFs and peels
Everyone was focused on skincare for the face until recently. But last year, we saw the beginnings of body skincare take over the beauty market. From body washes infused with active ingredients like Vitamin C and salicylic acid to sunscreens for the body, and even exfoliating peels, brands started exploring skincare for the body. This year, this trend will become more mainstream and more products in this category will be launched, making body care more popular.
