MUMBAI:  Many people are often confused as to whether IEM’s and earphones are the same things or not. But there are actually many major differences that distinguish them from each other. Since the two look very similar, it is often confused for each other. But the main difference between the two is that IEM’s, as the name suggests, go inside the ear canal as compared to normal earphones that rest on the outer ear. So let’s take a deep dive into the differentiating factors between the two.

Because of the unique shape and design of IEM’s, they provide much better noise isolation by sealing off the ear from outside noise. Earphones are unable to provide the same level of isolation because of their open design. And because of this feature of noise isolation, another benefit is that we won’t be forced to raise the volume so as to drown out the outside ambient noise. The louder and closer the sound is to your ears, the easier it is for it to damage your hearing. So with a good pair of IEM’s, you can protect your ears from unnecessary risk by hearing the music at a lower volume, but clearer and better.

Another difference between IEM’s and earphones is the sound quality. With better sound quality, one won’t find the need to keep raising the volume as the details will be clearly audible. Earphones usually come with low quality or a lesser number of drivers that provide low quality audio. But IEM’s can have multiple IEM’s that cater to different frequency ranges and provide much better quality than standard earphones.

Talking about comfort, earphones are generally considered more comfortable since they have a one-size-fits-all approach, but it can vary. Whereas, while IEM’s can be comfortable too, not all IEM’s always fit users and provide a tight seal because of its particular shape that does not fit every person’s inner ear. This factor is best determined through individual testing.

So these are the major distinctions between an IEM and an earphone. While we’ve covered most of the differences, one important aspect that is not accounted for is price range. The comparison between these two will vary drastically depending on cost, and brand.

After this, we hope that the distinction between the two is clear and that it will be of help when you go to buy your next audio accessory. Which one are you interested in: earphones or IEM’s? Let us know in the comments below.
