Notable film director Shatarupa Sanyal says that she was skeptical about making the docudrama titled ‘Sovabazar Rajbarir Andaramahal’ because enough research materials were not available on the same.
The film Sovabazar Rajbarir Andaramahal is based on the book by the same name written by Aparajita Sarkhel, who is also the producer of the film. It aims to throw light on the Andaramahal (inside the palace) and women of the Rajbari through Kamola Devi Bourani’s eyes.
For the uninitiated, Shobhabazar Rajbari is the palace of the Shobhabazar Royal family nestled in the city of joy. And Kamola Devi Bourani had come to the palace as a wife at the young age of nine.
About the film, Shatarupa said, “I did not want to make the film as study materials were very limited. It is based on the research work done by Aparajita. I agreed because it was her (Aparajita) dream. She has written columns on the women of the house and wanted people to know about them.”
“Our biggest support was the interviews of Kamola Devi Bourani. It was little Kamola Devi who had written about the famous Durga Puja of Sovabazar Rajbari that is being celebrated with grandeur even today,” She added.
Shatarupa admitted that the film could have been done in a better way if only they had better financial support system.
She opined, “It is not an extraordinary film. To make one extraordinary, you need a proper budget. Also, this is not a commercial venture. It has been done on a very limited budget but with lots of love. Viewers might spot some technical errors.”
Giaa Sarkhel, daughter of Aparajita, has essayed the role of Kamola Devi Bourani.
Speaking about her role, Giaa shared, “It is a great thing for me that I got to enact the role of Kamola Devi Bourani in my first film that too under the patronage of an eminent director like Shatarupa.”
The docudrama was recently screened at a city hall and will be available on YouTube.
